Spark Plug going bad in Apache Rtr 160
I have an apache Rtr 160 2007 .... off lately my bike keeps giving trouble... every 2 weeks or so the bike just wont start... when i get it checked the spark plug is the culprit... the mechanic cleans it and the bike starts off as normal but the next day the spark plug goes off again... so i tried changing the spark plug... With the new plug it works fine for another 2 weeks and exactly same thing happens... I have already changed the spark plug thrice... please help... i have been using Bosch sparkplug....Galt In Action......Tags: None

What's the color of the spark plug? If its tard black then its running rich & then getting fouled. The mechanic is probably cleaning off the carbon deposits that prevent it from getting combusted properly inside the cylinder & then the vehicle starts. Pls post some pics of your plug when your motorcycle doesn't start. That is, before cleaning.
BTW, do you've a carb or Fi model of 160?Skill is what keeps you on a Motorcycle

Can you also describe how this issue started? Is there anything specific you did or did this happen after a service or any specific event?Originally posted by redlogo2089 View PostMine is RTR carbSkill is what keeps you on a Motorcycle

Here are images of my spark plug...
As for how the problem started.... I had given my bike for service to a mechanic in December. After the service the bike was running fine till mid feb. and then the problem started when i tried to start my bike in the morning, it wont start. Took it to mechanic, he cleaned the spark plug and all was fine. Exact same thing happened the next day. so i thought lets change the spark plug. It ran fine for 2 weeks and exact same problem..
Also when i took my bike to mechanic this time he was saying that bike has too much current... is something like that possible...Last edited by redlogo2089; 03-20-2011, 12:16 PM.Galt In Action......

Sorry pal, the pics aren't clear, but I could make out that the plug is tard black.
Possible when the plug gets more current from the ignition coil. Anyway, I'd suggest you tune the carb with a different mechanic or from TVS.A.S.S, run it for sometime & see if the issue still persists. If it does, then take to next level by troubleshooting with ignition coil, CDI & so on.this time he was saying that bike has too much current... is something like that possibleSkill is what keeps you on a Motorcycle

it is due to fouling in the combustion chamber, check the a/f ratio and get it adjusted ,fouling is mainly due to rich mixture and wat mileage are you getting.Originally posted by redlogo2089 View PostHere are images of my spark plug...

Your mileage is low and the plug is fouled......But RTR comes with UR5 DDC with twin ground electrode, and your pic shows normal single electrode plug.Originally posted by redlogo2089 View Posti'm getting close to 40km/l.... will get the a/f ratio tuned from different mech...
After riding the bike for 10 Kms take out the plug and see..If the black deposit is wet and oily it shows you are getting engine oil into the chamber..if it is dry black then it means rich AF mix. When Was The Last Time,You Did Something For The First Time.

wrote a mail to TVS..Teritry mngr came..inspected..opened the engine as there was some spot which was getting charred n giving extra carbon deposit on the spark plug...may be you might be having the same problem..go to ASC n take their class n it should be sorted..

Just got the bike checked by a mechanic (a reliable one)... he said that there is smoke coming out of the silencer... also to solve the problem he needs to do some reboring with piston and all... he is quoting that it will cost around 2-2.5k.... does this make any sense to you guys... if yes please enlighten...Galt In Action......
