  • White smoke in exhaush - CBZ Xtreme ATFT

I recently bought a used CBZ Xtreme ATFT bike (used, 2009 Dec Model)

Previous owner had used normal oil, and since last 6 months, he was using Synthetic Oil.
Original air filter is replaced with K&N Filter

White Smoke is observed if I drive for some time (not observed immediately after starting bike)

    Smoke has burned oil smell.

WE DID NOT FEEL ANY PROBLEM IN DRIVING. At least 3-4 times we have reached above 90 KM/H, not found nay problems. Also the bike pickup is excellent. It is far better than pulsar 150 (never tried 180, so do not know about that)

Checked the oil level and found it is empty. Did not observe oil leak, but exhaust has oil smell. It was only 500 + KMS since oil was changed last time.

Consulted the mechanic, he said the engine is perfectly fine, bust I asked him to do a thorough check on bike.
    Changed oil to normal oil
He changed piston ring and oil seal.
    Cleaned engine and K&N Filter.

So far I driven 50 KMS after the service, within speed of 45 Km / H
Still I can see the white smoke.

Contacted the workshop again, they said to bring back the bike for checking.

I am now out of station, so will go to him in next week.
Meanwhile I am looking for your valuable suggestion and comments.

Let me repeat - Bike Pickup is excellent, did not find any problem while riding, even at higher speed, other than the white smoke

    Thanks in Advance

How long did you ride the bike without oil in it?
Did you see the piston or cylinder when the mechanic opened up the engine?

White smoke typically indicates a worn out engine. Means, the rings could be worn out, the cylinder wall could be worn out. White smokes appears because the oil is able to get into the top of the piston, which ideally should not happen.

Did you do a compression test? Ideally that's the first step to check before changing rings or reboring the engine.

go to any good SVC. better check and do repair if required from SVC. and within 500 Kms the oil has gone. this is sure problem of piston ring or cylinder as mentioned above. get hold of a good mechanic in SVC for checking
Don't research too much while purchasing, else you will commit blunder

i think the problem is with the engine, and mechanic tried to do a cheap quick fix by changing piston rings.........

keep driving and check oil level regularly, if it holds well and good.......if it doesn't hold..........time for repairs.

also check if oil is leaking from any other area like oil seals etc.

Thank you all for your replies.

Atleast 10 kms, but not sure if i had driven more without oil.
i saw, but could not make out anything.. Let me tell you it was the first time I saw engine parts..
I do not know about compression test, no not sure if they had done that.

Bike is serviced from Joe's Garage (people might be knowing him if you are from Bangalore), but mechanic is not Joe
Next week I need to go and meet Joe
I am not in Bangalore now

well its not a matter of worry. I have noticed usually you get white smoke for a while after replacing piston rings and seal... but after your run-in period and next oil change it disappears and bike performs well.
As a precautionary measure I will suggest you keep a check on oil level every 500 kms.

I went to Joe's garage but he was not their.
Also i didnt observe white smoke when i was in garage, so could not show them other mechanics there. (Not sure, if it was not visible due to sun light)
I took the bike and told them i will come back if i find the smoke again. On the way back to home, I observed smoke again (i was under shade).
I did not go back to garage because Joe is not there.
I Will ride the bike one more day (30+ kms) and then meet Joe if smoke is still coming.

i have now driven 120 kms since the piston ring and oil seal is changed. Still i see the white smoke (not much visible under sun light, but yes under shade)
I dont know if smoke intensity is changed.

Should i drive more and check the smoke and oil level?

Joe have checked my bike and said no problem with bike, and the smoke should disappear after a while.
I did not get chance to talk to him, and he don't know much details
The previous bike owner had talked to Joe and updated to me.

I will go and take bike in the evening.
I hope i will get chance to discuss this with Joe in evening.

I am still not convinced with his answer,
so far I have driven 132 kms since the piston ring is changed, and still smoke was coming (don't know if smoke is coming as it was before)

When some one say it should disappear after sometime, approx how many kms more i have to drive?

Also this bike was being serviced from the same garage, so i feel a possibility that mechanic is trying to help the prev owner
(I understand this garage is one of the best in Bangalore, and they also want to keep their reputation)

might be ur engine head valves are a bit bend.this normally creates the oil burning problem and is not seen generally.check if its that issue...dont go to mechies who ur not convinced with.

Thank you all for your valuable time and reply.

Everything seems to be ok now..
did not observe smoke after 330 KMS.

Checked oil level yesterday, found no change.

Still I have a question here (I am glad that problem is fixed, but curious to know about it)
Almost everyone says if the issue is fixed, the white smoke should disappear within 20 to 50 Km of ride. But in my case, I had to drive approx 330 kms.
                          Why is that?
Previously oil tank became empty within 500 KMS, which would have accumulated in silencer, but does it take such a long time to burn completely?

Still I feel some issues .. (not sure if I just feel so..)

Since the piston ring changed, I did not take my bike above 60 KM/h for first 500 KMS.

Last 2-3 days I had taken it to above 70 - 80 km/h and I felt missing (don't know exactly what is meant by "missing")
For a fraction of second, I felt like bike doesn't have power.

It happened couple of times in 14 kms ride, today morning.
So far I driven 90 kms since I felt this prob first time.

                            No smoke
NO change in oil level (at least the change is NOT noticeable)
                            Bike has K&N filter

I am not an experienced driver, so I don't know if this is really a problem.

Pls let me know if this is a problem, what could be wrong, and how to fix this

subhash, if possible dump the KN filter for a while and see if you have 'missing' problem. Also get the carb cleaned.
