    Karizma Fuel Cap Problem

    I ve recently started facing a pretty similar problem on my 2005 ZMA. The bike seems to be struggling a bit to rev up and acceleration is not as before. Then it will not start up at signals once in a while. Once i remove the fuel cap and put it on, it starts up. Acceleration is also crisp. I asked my local mech and he told the fuel cap is the problem and we got to change it. What could be the problem? Please advise..

    It has become a serious problem lately. Yesterday the engine got off when a bus was behind me in the signal! Too many curses i guess from everyone!
    We are miles away from the routine.
    Headlights rise over the horizon.
    Pierce the morning fog.
    Cut through the clutter in our minds.
    Carve new highways!

      happend to me also sometimes.
      1. Mostly due to an air lock.
      2. Dust in the tank/carb.
      3. Clogged Air filter.
      4. Old Spark Plug.
      5. Running Rich.

      1 ,2 , 3 are the most probable.
      I changed the air filter as it was old , and then re tuned it. Its all super fine now. No cold start issues or anything.Nor stopping anywhere.

        Are you saying that even after changing the fuel tank cap, the issue exists? If that were the case, then, lookout for a small hole underneath the fuel cap. There should be a cork between the metal cap underneath & the vacuum lid. Punch a nice hold in the cork & everything should be fine.

          Karizma has an advanced petrol vapour lock system like cars. If there is vapor build up it will be locked inside and not allowed to evaporate to exterior atmosphere..If there is vacuum being created then a small one way valve in cap opens to let in air from outside..If this valve or the cap breathing through side vents are blocked(dust and muck) then vapor lock will happen . After opening the cap place your mouth on the small white cap and try to suck in air, you should be able to do so..If you are not able to suck in air through the small hole in the cap then your vents are blocked and a thorough cleaning is required for the cap.

            Don't think there is any problem with the air filter and spark plug because changed to K&N and NGK Iridium recently.

              i face a similar problem with my 2006 karizma..bike doesn't start sometimes even after using choke etc. but when i remove the seat it immediately starts and i place the seat back in its position and carry on.....any solutions guys??

                There is a fuse box underneath the seat in the center. Open it and just remove and re-insert the fuses..after this check your battery connections for loose contact.If this does not solve your problem ....there is a relay to the left of the battery..it is the starter relay,....there will be a connector plug on top of it..remove this by pulling it up and reinsert it.

                  ZMA-R Shuts off!!! :-(

                  @MAXzma: I have a ZMA-R Jan 2011 and I am facing the same problem as you......Even in traffic jams the engine just shuts off....on using the self start, it starts with half a crank as the ZMA usually does but shuts off immediately......just like u...I HAVE TO OPEN THE FUEL TANK CAP AND PUT IT ON back and it works fine.....definitely its a airlock...bt donno wats causing the issue....will be goin to the SVC this weekend....incase u find any solution lemme know...!

                  @psr: very nicely explained....will check this out tomorrow....if this resolves my issue...wont have to visit the SVC

                  @ajay_meda: if its about re-fitting the seat...along with Psr's advice, checkout the air passage under seat for any kinda blockage, make sure u dont keep any papers (RC, etc) or a cloth there

                    Next time , before opening the fuel lid , Just turn the Key to off position
                    Turn it on and again crank.

                    Check if it starts . Iv seen a lot of zma's facing the same issue. And the key off and on works.

                        I had some kind of lid on the breather tube.. Dunno how it got there. I removed it and I did not have the air lock problem for a week now. It again happened this morning! Dunno why..

                          Did you flush water through the drain hole near tank mouth ...like I asked you to ?If problem still persists, the try sucking air through the small white cap in the underside of petrol tank cap...if you can then your petrol cap vents are ok,.....if not then remove the small white vent cap, and blow compressed air through the big hole of the cap and again fit the small cap and try...Here is the pic., with the small white Vent cap removed to show the bigger vent hole to blow compressed air..Do not use compressed air on the small white cap...it will get permanently damaged .

                            ^^ Yes sir I poured water through the hole. I did it when it was dark a few days back so i did not know exactly where the water was flowing out. Will check it out tomorrow morning. And yes i sucked out air through the white cap and air seemed to be flowing. Will try the syringe and hole trick tomorrow morning and post the results. Thanks a lot again..

                              The water will come through the thick drain pipe near the main stand and drip to the floor.make sure you send at least 500ml of water through it to flush out blocks.....But before you do that Make sure that the path is clear,otherwise water will stagnate in the pipe and overflow in to the petrol tank...so start with 25 ml in to the drain hole and see it come out at the other end..
