  • Decreasing Engine Oil Level

    I own a 2010 Bajaj Pulsar 220 Dts-i.
I've been using the Motul 15 W 50 300V double ester engine oil since its 7500km mark.
Until the next service, the level of oil had decreased by half and i topped it up with the same oil that i had left.
But it wasnt the case after the completion of the next 2500kms. The oil level had only decreased maybe one mm on the window, thats it.
During the next service i had changed it since it had done 5000kms on the oil and the cycle kept repeating.
Now its done 15000kms..i had changed the oil at 12500kms..now the level of oil is around 75%(as the window reads).
it couldn't have been a reading error since i engage the center stand and wait for about 10mins to check the level of oil.
i occasionally rev my bike and when i do, i rev it so hard(beyond 10krpm,sometimes even 11krpm) that it begins to make a noise like it has caught cold or something and the bike feels like its going to fall apart.
    My Questions are:
(1)is it normal for the oil level to decrease at this rate? since many people say that it shouldnt happen with a fully synthetic oil.
(2)if its a problem..what might be wrong with my bike?
(3)my bike has never stalled or i never experienced any knocking inside the engine...neither there are leakages from the engine nor did i ever notice any smoke from the exhaust...the AFR that i kept is just a wee bit rich..not much
so where is all this oil going to? i mean how is it that its being consumed and there is no signs of it anywhere?
(4)i only notice a significant level of change when i rev it..the change is like maybe one mm or even less but i noticed it since i use the reference of the teeth like structues inside the window...is the decrease normal?

    Regards,
    Gauthama.K.V.S,
    Hyderabad.

It's a common phenomenon with synthetic oils in some engines , it just vanishes .. no smoke , no leak ... just goes into thin air .
Revert to good 20w50 grade oil as recomended for your engine .... Running an engine with low oil is a bad idea , as much as it is extra headache to keep checking oil levels every now and then and topping it up . I am sure there is nothing wrong with your bike itself .

Change the oil and don't topup!

Never Top-up the Engine oil. First while changing the oil, please drain the old engine oil first and wait for 5 to 10 min to let the remaining oil to come off...
If you got extra engine oil just pour a little oil (about 50 ml) in the top opening and drain it too, this will make sure the remaining debris come out. Then close the empty screw or knob under the bike firmly. Now top up it with 20W 50 oil and close the lid above it firmly and not too tight (I personally recommend Castrol 20W 50). The exact quantity should be 1150 ml (1200 ml if you prefer wont make much difference). Remember that the engine oil not only give you enough lubrication but also cleans the inside parts!. I prefer changing the engine oil myself. Because, the official service center of any bike company may fool you by toping up your engine oil and not changing it. As they earn by billing that the engine oil been changed!

Just for the sake of observation and trouble shooting,
          * shift to Motul 5100 15W50 semi-synthetic completely.
          * ride normally and dont keep bouncing off the rev-limiter.
          * To check oil level, do it in the morning after leaving the bike overnight on main stand.

Do this for a while and see if the problem persists. Synthetic oil just vanishing into thin air has been reported by few people elsewhere too. If you feel nothing is wrong with the bike then do the above and check.
You can take the ride away from me but you cannot take the rider out of my soul.........

Some people reported the same issue with castrol and motul FS,on the next drain shift to bajaj oil/motul ss/or any other 20w50 grade oil and check the oil regularly if there is any decrease in the level

              oil

The normal synthetic oils are actually base stock oil with additives , to make it synth....True synths are a breed apart .

In bike which are subjected to high heat due to Revving the esters break down and oil becomes thinner. this then escapes through the rings and gets slowly burnt....and hence lower oil levels...
Stick to non synth close value oils , because oils with a wider range have more esters which breakdown due to repetitive heat stress shear.
Always warm up the engine slowly before going to higher RPM.

@Polkar: since synths are supposed to be changed every 5000kms and i service my bike every 2500kms..i add extra oil (the left overs after the last change[the same oil])...i donot mix various oils

@psr: thanks bro..i have heard this from a few other xbhpians at hyderabad
they also say that the broken down esters can also escape through the radiator of the oil cooler at high speeds, although i dont know how far its true.

@motormania: i do try my best not to rev it...but sometimes i just cant help it ...the oil only starts to vanish WHEN I REV...at normal speeds it isnt affected much.

I chose to continue using the synthetic oil..because i feel my bike has improved its cold start ability..it doesnt cry anymore...
the oil also helps keep the engine cool upto a greater extent when compared to the mineral oils...
all in all...i spend all the 2lts of oil i buy within the 5000kms
                but its worth it..
