  • Oil consumption in bike

Recently I posted a new thread on reboring but before that I wish to also know from members of this forum about excessive oil consumption by the bike.
My bike Victor GLX 125 almost 85000 kms done and had changed block piston some 8000 kms back.
But from the day when I have changed this block piston,I used to see oily spark plug and at many times,I had to remove and clean the spark plugs after 600 kms.Earlier there was no oil consumption by this bike. But nowadays when I fill 1 liter/900 ml of oil and after 2000 kms when I drain the older oil,I find hardly 400 ml oil is left.
When I start my bike in morning,I see no smoke even if I race hard the throttle.
Till I drive my bike for 10-15 kms,no smoke is seen.
Once when the engine gets hot,the oil gets hot,and then I am able to see light bluish/white smoke from exhaust. But this smoke is not to often.
Also the tip of exhaust is oily black when touched.
Mileage I get is around 60 kmpl
In 4th gear I can climb any slope in top gear and that too at lower speed around 30 kmph very easily hence compression is also good

one mechanic is saying it is problem of valves/crank whereas other mechanic says that it is problem of block piston(This mechanic says that even if mileage and compression is good but still it is problem of piston).but my doubt is that how can a piston changed before 6 months and 8000 kms back be worn out.My orignal piston lasted for around 75000 kms inspite of riding my bike for 300 kms in one day quite often and many times I exceeded top speed of 110 kmph with pillon(Top speed in manual of Victor GLX is 100 kph) but still the piston lasted for 75000 kms.
There are confusing statements from mechanics hence earlier I thought of reboring instead of going for new piston.
But any mechanic first suggests to open the engine because the labor charge is 1200 rupees plus 400 rupees will be unnecesscarily wasted on gaskets and 200 rupees on stem seals plus wastage of time and if nothing happened to the piston, then all this money and time is also wasted.
is there any way to stop valve leak without opening engine.Because I think that for just a small rubber stem seal,it is not fair enough to unload the whole engine and open the head.
Unfortunately TVS engine cannot be opened easily like Hero Honda bikes.TVS engine is vertical and the chasis cradle comes in between and hence only one option is to unload the engine completely. Can this be avoided

I am not able to know from where the oil comes on the spark plug.Surprisingly when I open the spark plug, the tip looks whitish and dry whereas the threads and the electrodes of spark plug are oily and has residues of burnt oil.

Because based on my past experience, when my earlier piston was gone, right from starting of engine in morning,I used to see dense bluish white smoke(at traffic signals, even two stroke bikes didnt gave smoke like my bike),my spark plug got shorted in few hundred kms of running plus at that time I used to get mileage of around 45 kmpl. But here from 8000 kms,I am using the same spark plug.Only what I do is I take out this spark plug after 500-600 kms running and clean it.But the spark plug is not getting short.
Could anyone tell me whether it is problem of piston/valves/gaskets/timing problem

the symptome on your bike are typically of a busted inlet valve guide/seal gone bad.
i have had this experience when the seal on my intake valve had been busted.

there is just 2 paths from where the oil can enter the combustion volume.
      1) from the inlet valves/ seal area
      2) from a busted block piston.

since you have recently changed the piston, it is unlikely that the piston would have gone.btw, had you changed the piston rings?

please check the engine in the following sequence:-
1 it could be that your intake manifold might have cracked and oil might be mixing with the air fuel mixture. for this, you wont need to open the engine. just remove the carb and stuff the inside of the inlet manifold with a clean cloth. if there is oil on this, you have nailed the problem. else check again with your finger for any wetness of the manifold

      2) if there is no oil on the rag, you need to dismount the engine, open the head and inspect the inlet valve seal. for such a monumental leak, it will be easily identifiable if the seal is cracked. if the seal is damaged, still proceed to the next step.

      3) if the seal is ok, this step is not essential but still remove the inlet valve and check it for long deep scratches on it. (inlet valve is generally of a larger diameter) if there are long and deep scratches on the valve, get it replaced. (you will also have to replace the inlet seal)

      4) if after all the above steps, still you find oil on the spark plug, that means either the block or the piston is duplicate/ damaged. also check the piston rings.

Please get this done from a reputed and experienced mechanic. a good mechanic will charge extra but it saves you the headache of unrelieable machine.

wish your bike a speedy recovery

        One word - CRAPPY REBORING
the piston rings should be first thing you should check.
the plug is burning oil along with petrol looking at what you said.
keep the bike in neutral on main stand, revv , look for smoke in the exhaust... and even worse,if the correct piston is not used(one number less) after re-boring,then it is a fresh rebore kit (or maybe only a new piston)... if your bike is drinking oil in such a manner, and if you get 400ml drain after 2k kms,i recommend you check and top up every 500 kms,if not ,if it is minor problem, will turn into a big one due to lack of oil...

open the engine and get it checked asap by an experianced mech...

          Thanks Rokrrz

I will check in that sequence.
By the way is the intake manifold the rubber pipe connecting the head?
I dont know about intake manifold hence asking.
Also one point is not clear how can intake manifold affect the oil consumption.

Last time I actually made a big mistake of approaching Castrol bike center for block piston. It costed me around 5500 rupees whereas even a best mechanic in Pune will charge around 3300(2200 for new block,300 for packings,700 for labor charges and 250 for valve grinding)

Actually I didnt rebored my bike 6 months back.Instead I went for new Block piston set and did the work from Castrol Bike Zone Pune.
Hence my piston is still stock.
I was thinking to rebore it but again in market I found that only pistons from SAM is available which starts giving problems within 1 year and so again open the engine .....
I clearly told the reboring person that I will rebore my bike on only one condition and that is "if and only if I get Mahle piston till 0.5 mm max"
But nowadays Mahle's pistons are not available hence if block piston is to be changed, again I will go for standard block set from OEM.

Well after opening the engine,The fried out stem seals and worn out valve guides were the main culprit
              Also the piston was fine

I was having another worn out block hence I bored it and put sleeve
and done reboring by 1 mm oversize. Now my bike is 131.2 cc and even after raising too much throttle doesnt emit smoke.
Well I am in first 500 kms run in mode hence dont run my bike above 50 but I have observed that since the reboring work ws done by best reborer plus the valve grinding and tappet settings were done very good hence I am getting good mileage also plus this speed of 50 can be reached with a slight twist of throttle.
After 200 kms of riding till now after reboring but the spark plug tip is light brown and dry whereas earlier even after 50 kms,my spark plug used to get coated with oil.

By the way is the intake manifold the rubber pipe connecting the head?

nope, its the small metalic pipe that connect the carburettor and the head. but the one i meant was the portion where the manifold sits on the head.

I dont know about intake manifold hence asking.
Also one point is not clear how can intake manifold affect the oil consumption.

if its cracked, oil seeps into manifold, collects there and slowly drops into the engine via the intake valve
