  • How to know the rpm without tachometer

I have read many threads on many bike forums regarding tuning of bike like
increasing idling till 3000 rpm then opening(anticlockwise) out the air screw till rpm drops and then again start rotating air screw clockwise till there high rpm and then rotating the idling screw and decreasing idling rpm till 1000.

More or the same from any biking forums,I am able to read almost same kind of posts. But these posts are useful for those whose bikes have got a tachometer.

But my main question is that if your bike doesnt have a tachometer, how can you know whether it is 3000 rpm/1400/7000 rpm .....

How to identify engine rpm based on sounds from engine.

    Thanks and Regards
    Pankaj

my bike mechanic says that the least rpm at which your bike wont switch off for a few seconds atleast in neutral gear is the best rpm(~1k)
but my manual says 1.4k +/- 100 is good...

I think you can use an external tachometer to measure the engine rpm even if your bike doesn't come with one.

Most service centers have it if I'm not mistaken.
Signals which are timed for 50 Kmph are also timed for 100 Kmph :)

Mahajan is right. One can use external tachometer that can read the signals from the power going to spark plug & make out the RPM reading.

For tuning carb, tacho is must, bro.
My experience on most indian bikes says when engine starts sounding stressed (dont feel, just listen the sound from engine) then its between 4-5k rpm.
            Can't be more specific.

                yes, you can.
There are many aftermarket bolt-on tachometer available....
Or you can swap your complete instrument panel (which fits) which has inbuilt tachometer

Do you mean to say that if I source a speedometer kit having tachometer which fits my bike,it will work?
Because Fiero Fx speedometer assembly completely fits on my bike.
But one more question where is the provision for tachometer
I mean to say that my bike is without tachometer hence all the wirings connections will be for respective functionalities
So will I need a extra wiring to connect and function the tachometer?

                    idling rpm

Actually idling RPM setting is done after the bike engine is warm ie after running 5 kms
So when you start the engine in morning,it is quite normal that you will have engine rpm to 1000.
Its idling rpm will go to 1400 once you drive your bike till 4-5 kms.

So immidiately after starting bike in morning,it is not preferable to set idling rpm to 1400 because after 4 to 5 kms of running your bike, your bike idling rpm will become around 2000.
Hence check your idling rpm after the engine is warm enough. If it is not 1400 +/- 100 then only correct it

sorry for my late reply bro..
If you are buying some aftermarket tacho then the seller should have appropriate and all info about installing it. I guess wiring will be done from the spark distributer..
Sorry again don't 've any pic to post
