  • Rusted Silencer - Smoke from fresh paint.

I own a 2 yr old RTR 160 which has done 20k on the odo till date. Now coming to the problem, the front half of the silencer got rusted very badly and with rains setting in it was getting worse. The ASC guy said he will not be able to do anything and suggested me to get it done somewhere outside. So i take it to my local mech and he says the rust can be cleaned with an emery paper and the whole silencer can be repainted with a black canned spray paint.

I was a bit skeptical about using an external paint on a part that gets extremely hot and moreover the mech said this paint will eventually peel off due to the heat.

Half heartedly bought a can of Bosny black and gave it to my mech. 2 Hours later, the whole silencer is painted and to my shock, the paint is shiny gloss black as opposed to the matte black of stock bike and my bike is of T.gray which is again a matte gray. Bottom line, the silencer is looking fugly now.

I could have gotten away with it by not looking at people on the road who are staring at it like an ugly duckling. I am redline rider and to my shock whenever i stop at signals, there is lot of smoke coming from the whole silencer. It is quite embarrassing and the breathing those fumes isn't exactly comfortable either.

I wanna get it painted to matte/powder black and a heat resistant paint (stock specs preferably) Can anyone out there help me out where can i get this done in pune.I stay in PCMC and i wouldn't mind venturing into the city for a couple of hours to get this done. Please help me out.

What was the paint you used? I had a similar experience on a chrome exhaust when I painted it with Nippon Muffler black (but without scoring it with emery/sand paper). But a friend who did this after roughening with emery/sand paper and using the same type of paint reported that its staying.

Hey lijok i ve used a bosny make black spray paint . Its an aerosol can of 400 ml. I ve got the rust cleaned thoroughly using a sand paper. The problem is everytime it gets heated, it gives out smoke and the paint is gloss black. So it is probably not the right paint for silencers.
Anyways have spoken to tvs customer care today and the guy suggested powder coating which is 2-3 day process. @trustvishwas also suggested the same. So i think i ll have to go ahead with that

@rev: There are different types of black paints in Bosny shade card. Any from what i can make of the above, i guess you've picked up the normal matte black paint. Get the high heat matte black paint (available in bosny ) for around 350 per can. Have used it and it stay good for about 6 months. one can should give u around 2 resprays. The other option is powder coating, lasts much longer only downside is the time taken for this process.

All you can do for now is to wait for the paint to burn. It may take some time, but eventually it will go vaporized.
Painting exhaust is a tough deal, tell us what was the result of powder coating.

Wirebrush off the gloss paint. It's not doing you much good, and as you note it is already burning off. If you *have* to paint, go find some "stove black" paint, which is a flat paint and also can withstand extreme temperatures.
