  • Upgrading Lighting in my Discover 125

    Hi all,

Presently I own a 2004 model Discover 125 DTSi. I wanted to go for an R15 or TBird but my dad wants me to ride this for a few more years. I am thinking of upgrading a few segments in it in a phased manner.

Phase 1 : Convert bike to DC and install a Bi-Xenon HID with projector

    - I am planning to upgrade to Amaron 9Ah battery for this
    - From the threads by nano I understand that I will need to use Piaggio Ape's RR coil.
    - I am not sure if this can be done but I prefer 4300K (white) for high beam and yellow (not sure of the K value) for the low beam

Phase 2: Install disc brakes from P 150

Phase 3: Install the rear tyre of Discover 135 and make both front and rear as tubeless. This will take some time as I got fresh tyres recently (some 3000km back).

I live in Bangalore (BTM Stage 2) and have been searching the net for some good mechanics who can do this. I got a few mechanic names through xBHP and Google but those were from old threads.

Have anyone from Bangalore done the DC conversion with Piaggio Ape's RR coil?

How much would the first phase cost me approximately?

I do not mind riding down to Chennai or Mysore or Hyderabad for the mod if it will take only a weekend's time.

    Waiting for some good responses!

Harish, All the mods you have mentioned are not worth on a 2004 Disc, taking into account that you are upgrading to bikes like R15/TB. Kindly 'timepass' the present Disc and pester your with all methods possible to get you a new bike

        @vipin_s

Lets just say that this bike is of some sentimental value to me. Even though I had planned on upgrading to a bigger bike I did not want to dump or sell this off. So now that its going to be with me for some more time I want to install at least the HID.

All the mods can be done.
Phase 1 : Check the "Let there be light" thread. http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/universa...g-hid-etc.html
Phase 2 : Easy thing. You can get the forks, RIM, Disk Brake Unit from the P150. This should cost you around 6k
Phase 3 : The hole in the alloy of the D125 is a tad smaller to allow the Valve of a Tubeless tyre. Since you will change your front wheel with the P150, a tubeless tyre is an easy fit, but the rear will either need replacement or a jugaad.
Otherwise, the rear tyre of a D135,D150 or a P150 ( 110/90 ) is a direct fit on the rim.
I am not sure if the one you've got is shod with alloys. If it is a spoke wheel, you can directly upgrade to the wheel and tyre from a P150.

Thanks man! The reply is very direct to the point.

I read so many pages in that thread and came to an understanding that BiXenon with projector set up will be best for my bike. Shreeni has suggested me to go visit a shop named Ruby Electricals. Will go there on weekend. I shall keep the updates posted on this thread.

Definitely man! This bike is so good in the rain. A slightly bigger rear tyre and a disc, I am sure this will rock. I shall keep you and this thread posted on the costs incurred too.

Guys today the battery died and I went to get a new Amaron one. The old one is an Exide Freedom 12MX9-B. It a 9Ah battery! The Amaron guy says a 9Ah wont fit in my bike but it is already running a 9Ah one. Any idea what to do?

A little bit of welding/bending should do. I am not sure of the exact dimensions of the batteries, but you could just try fitting it in, if it works, good, otherwise, any decent mechanic/welder should be able to help you out.

Done. Got an Amaron Pro Rider 9Ah battery from an Amaron dealer on Varthur Main Road, Whitefield. Initially the mechanic there and the sales guy said only 5 Ah is specified for my bike. Then I opened the side cover and showed them that its a 9 Ah one and then they agreed. It fit like a charm. No issues at all. It came with a 4 year and not 5 year warranty.

Cost of new battery + buy back of old battery = INR 1700.

While returning I enquired the price of Exide 9 Ah to an Exide dealer and he quoted me 1400.

A few doubts. Some one please help me with it.

                        - What does Ah denote? A is a measure of current and h is a measure of time. But Ah?
                        - What is the maximum load the battery can take now and how to calculate it?
                        - How do I know what the current headlight power is? In the manual it is put as 35W/55W. If this is it, then when I put a HID, I can put a 55W directly without much changes, right?

Amaron has reduced the warranty to 4 yrs from the earlier 5 yrs.

Ah --> Ampere Hour, it is the amount of current in amperes, that is transferred over a period of one hour.
An HID bulb, AFAIK works only on DC.
I don't think it is possible to plonk a 55w bulb directly. You'd need to check with a good electrician or go through those DC conversion threads. Have you checked out with those Ruby Electrical guys?

My friends' calculation is that the max load is 108 W but it can take a bit more when the bike is running. As for the Ruby guys, I am planning to go on Saturday as I come home from office pretty much by this time only.
