  • Tiny 1 liner tappet adjustment info needed...

Long story short, as we all know, apache tappets are quite noisy.... Mine RTR 160 has covered 1900km, due for 2nd service...

When the bike gets warmed up (read :10 kms driving) it gets quite ringing and after around 30 km becomes a tiring chatter... Need to get it adjusted frm svc...

now i am confused when should the tappet clearance be set ? engine hot or cold ? because i am tempted to drive around a bit before dropping it off for service just so that the tappet sound becomes more pronounced and they surely rectify it ...

    just a brief qwery....

if you have a habit of ripping your bike quite often, then don't get your tappets set too tight, a bit loose is better, but not ofcourse too loose.

I take it to 6k for shifts upto 4th, and beyond upto 7-8k in the 5th gear... does that refer to ripping ? :-p

fyi, i have yet never redlined....

yes it does. Best option is to set them hot. You will have some chatter when it starts, but once it comes to operating temps, the engine will be smoother.

Was in a habit of keeping my tbird mostly in the power band. Between 2.5-3000 rpm. Would face the same issue with tappets. Set em hot, and it worked like a charm

Generally, tappet setting is done when the engine is cold. And TVS too recommends the same.Valve clearance for RTR160 is 0.07mm for intake & 0.11mm for the exhaust.Get the tappets adjusted only with the help of feeler guage!

Yeah, will be taking it to svc tomorrow.... Just hope they have the different feeler gauges for setting the correct settings, i dont have any other options either... Asked in a different thread about good tvs svc, but people didnt reply much to that query, so this is the only i have got... Have to trust watever they do.... :-(

btw, you are saying if they properly adjust it when cold then the chatter which comes hard in high temps will come down too ?? If it is that way then i will get it done when cold....

^^ because the tappets will expand and take up the clearance when hot.

if you can get it adjusted, when hot, its better, but no mechanic will work when engine is hot for fear of burning their hands.
