Broken chain sprocket tooth.

hi i have a yamaha rx 135. yesterday i found that my back chain sprocket has its tooth alternatively broken. I have my chain guard removed. What would be the reason of it? please suggest me how to avoid this after changing to new one?

uhh... a loose chain, or too tight a chain.... Were you checking chain tension at regular intervals??
