  • kick start problem

Recently I shown my bike (pulsar 150 ug3 odo-21k kms) to the SC as it doesn't start using kick lever. Even using the self I ve to engage the throttle slightly, though it start in one try. If I use only the self then I have to crank for probably 5secs or more and soon the engine dies....
After using the kick several times the SC guys said there is low compression as the lever sometimes gets slight free. Then they revv the engine at high RPM to check white smoke (ring prob), but no smoke. So they finally came to conclusion that there is leak in valve. But contrary to what they said my bike has good pickup, mileage, good high end, good engine sound, bike starts using lever when engine is hot,and every thing perfect except starting with kick lever and engaging the throttle while using the self.
I doubt rings .....coz.....Once my friend was ripping my bike above 100kmph with a pillion for around 20 mins slight uphill, white smoke started to come out of the exhaust and from (near) engine with burning smell. The engine halted and even after several attempt refused to start. After 5 minutes though it started but with no smoke or any problem but the rear tyre was found flat (very low pressure with a nail). slight drop in oil.
After that when ever i stress my bike too much white smoke (though low) starts to come out of the exhaust but negligible drop in oil.

So is the rings culprit? I want my bike to start at a slight touch of the crank button. Though I rarely need to kick start, but want to know the prob. I dont want to open the engine as there is no major issues in my bike.
so kindly help me as I dont trust the SC guys.

it seems it was over heated then and got little damaged.
      Get the compression test done.
It can be valves, or can be piston ring+piston+bore..
Is there any abnormal sound from engine?
And do post about yourself at Who Are You section.

Did you got your valve Clearance adjusted recently? Asking this coz tighter than recommended valves can lead you to starting problem as well as little poor performance.
Else i think its the piston or bore or may be both.

no..but i got the tappet setting during last service.
Tomorrow I ll take my bike to SC for compression checkup....Earlier I had told them to do the same....but the mechanic over confidently told me that its the leaky valve causing the problem and gave me an estimate of Rs.600

then it may be possible that tappets are tight..
Compression test should tell if the valves are problematic or piston+bore.
              So get it done.
              Gurus plz pour in..

I talked to my mechanic (SC guy who also works outside on Mondays). He said that it may be due to tappet setting. he ll check the tappet setting, if problem is solved then Ok or else will proceed further..

The starting mechanism works when the yellow pole on the stator give out heavy amount of voltage in 1 crank rotation.
This voltage goes to the IGN coil, and after proper timing (generated by pulse) its fended to the spark plug.

So the starting problem can be because of a weak HT coil, or weak IGN coil.
However, if you try to check the spark or the plug, you'll realize weather this is really the actual cause of starting issue or not.

Check your spark plugs, check the current, get the yellow pole on the stator checked if it has lower resistance.

If all these things are okay, then comes valve clearance issues and so on.
Giving a lot to a fiero.
Expecting a lot from a fiero.

spark plugs good (recently changed) with proper spark.....stator's resistance to be checked....

did you got the compression test done?
And what about the electrical things told by 'nanotechnology' ?

White smoke indicates poor compression seal ie., worn rings and ,or bore.

yeah....it is less ......(dont have the exact figure)
low white smoke is usually seen when the engine is too much stressed at high speed (>100kmph) with heavy pillion......With single ride I haven't ever seen white smoke even during stressing (even crossing 110kmph)
My trusted SC mechanic will change the rings (if needed) and the valve outside SC, after Eid....
so will ve to wait for a week
Is there any problem in opening the engine....i am little bit scared....as i am not facing any big problem yet.....suggest

^^ you have to get your engine opened for ring and value replacement but if your problems are not that problematic then you can wait.
But always check your oil level (every 200-300 km) and maintain it at max level.
Btw, how often you go for high speed riding? And what's your normal riding speed & rpm?
