  • Urgent help on upjetting!

    Hey Guys

I got Joel's free flow for my P200. That free flow really brought back the charm of my old Pulsar. Been loving riding it. Now a couple of days ago I have been cleaning stuff in my room & found my old K&N 1100. Thought of giving it a try. Installed it. The engine growl is significantly better now But here is the problem the fuel mixture is noticeably lean. It really needs some upjetting.

Well I know the basics of carb tuning and upjetting. But the problem is I cant get those jets. I have tried at local mechanics/garages but no luck
Anybody know where I can source them?

    I live in Chandigarh.

    Thanks

im sure u can get it from the bajaj genuine spares shop.

or simply go to the spare parts shop of othe manufactures depending upon ur jet size!

The P200 stock jet is 110. You can try the P180UG3 jet which is sized 117.5. You need to try different jets out to get a suitable mixture.

I think he needs atleast 125 to feed the R1100.

Starting with 117.5 and then moving to larger jets makes more sense. You can try the apache RTR180 jet sized 125.

Try getting four to five normal jets and sit with a drilling machine and a few drill bits from 1.15 to1.25mm.Make different jets and then try them to get the perfect match.Pavan had done the same when he had the Free flow filter on his bike.He eventually removed it cos he got bugged by the growl.Maybe he can send you some spare jets he had made.Pulsars main jets are not that expensive. The jet from the RTR costs Rs.450

+1, the person is reliable and can make any size jets for you as per your specifications.

Slightly OT: Does the RTR have a Mikuni or a Keihin? If it is Mikuni, then isn't the jet thread pattern same on all Mikuni's?

                        N00b Alert:

guys i am also planning to buy a k&n filter for my Hinda unicorn..
but i am not sure whether its a good idea or not.. as i am not sure about how usefull it will be.. i dont know much about installing & upjetting..
Also will this downgrade the performance of my bike? i am not in for noise, i want improved performance, better mileage.
please help me with whether i should go for a k&N filter or not..?
if i should then which one(since there are many models).. & where can i get it from? also where can i get the installation & upjetting done..

                        thanks in advance.

Dont go for k&n. It only gives negligible performance increase that too with reduction in mileage and engine life. In short doesn't worth the money & time spent.
If you really want performance increase then you can have a tuned FFE installed, or play with the head or something and contact an expert, like Joel.

Thanks for the replies guys. and Happy new year to you all.

This weekend I tried asking more mechanics and few local performance parts sellers. nobody got a jet above 110 ( my stock main jet )

Few months back I read an article about upjetting. It consisited of three basic steps. First step was to put the best performing main jet. Then adjust the midrange power with needle height. then afterwards adjusting the AFR screw.

I tried something this Sunday when I was cleaning K&N. thought of opening carb myself just to clean it. Noticed that needle thing that goes into main jet. Opened it from other side just to see If I can adjust it. opened 2 screws from other side to get it out. There is a plastic ring type thing and a metal clip to hold it in postion. metal clip can be adjusted to 3 levels. It was at level 1 so I placed it at position 2 which is higher. Installed everything back together.

Started the bike. first gear, gave it some throttle and dumped the clutch. and I was like whoaaaa I did a little wheelie unintentionally . and pull was really good from the start, unlike stock P200 which is lazy until 4k rpm and now it gets really really good when you go over 4k rpm. Was really happy after a short ride I think now the K&N and Joel's free flow are really working (in low end and mirange).

Only part left is top end. For that I'll need a bigger jet. Sadly, which I cant find anywhere. But still good thing is bike is really great untill 7-8k rpm. I was planning to throw out K&N and put back the stock exhaust but now I wont. now I see what results can be expected with a free flow filter and exhaust coupled with right tuning. Really excited to do the next steps.

                              Its the Mikuni BS-29 carb.

Are you sure about its cost?450 bucks is too costly for just a carb jet!

What you had done is raised the needle position, yeah it works. As the needle raises more fuel is allowed to be sucked out through the main jet. The taper of the needle controls how much fuel is allowed to pass through the main jet at any given slide height. When the slide is at the lowest point no fuel can pass. When the slide is all the way at the top (at full throttle) the needle allows as much fuel to pass as the main can flow. Some needles have clips that can be adjusted and others have fixed heads. If your needle is not adjustable you can use small washers to raise the needle.
For jetting, follow the previous suggestions given.
