    RE Thunderbird TS pickup problem. HELP.

    Hello folks, me new here.
    Joined this forum to seek solution to this recurring problem in my Royal Enfield Thunderbird Twinspark, 2009.

    Lately when was riding my bike, i felt that the usual acceleration was missing. i used to get a few sudden surges of accelerations but overall it was a very sloppy ride.

    i went to my mechanic, he said that the carburetor & the air-filter needs cleaning as rain-water (oh.. sorry.. forgot to mention its monsoon season in bengal) has entered the carb via-airfilter.

    He de-assembled the whole carb, cleaned it, replaced a new air-filter & the bike was up & running !!! . Now comes the real problem, days later the same problem came back. I went to the mechanic again, he cleans the stuff puts it back, and the bike comes to life again.

    Now I have got my carb & airfilter cleaned 4 times in the past month. every time i get this done, my bike runs smoothly for 1-2 days & soon the pick-up problem rears its ugly head.

    What do you guys suggest ? neone else facing similar problem in his TBTS ?

      Similar problem on Electra Twinspark

      I have a similar problem on my electra twinspark which got drenched in the rain pretty bad. I cleaned the carb, replaced the air-filter and it seemed okay for a couple of days until the problem came back.

      When this symptom happens - as I accelerate, the engine starts to act as if it's turning off, sort of a choking and jerks forward. I haven't found a solution to it either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Been suffering for a long time with this problem.

        Time to clean your tank, fuel tap and fuel filter. ( cleaning and draining of tank very important. Remove fuel tap from tank and drain and then wash insides with diesel/kerosene or something.

          leaking engine oil now

          Thanks jd666, I think I'll tell the mechanic to do just that and whatever else needs to be done to get the bike running again. Today, while riding back from work, the engine oil started leaking out of the air-filter box. There's a little outlet back above the air-filter that spewed out about 200ml of engine oil. This is the second time this has happened. It seems to follow the choking and hesitation that the bike is undergoing as described in my previous post. Could this also be possible due to the water entering the tank?

            ^^ No then the amount of engine oil in the bike is excessive. I suggest you drain the engine oil, open the drain plug and leave it like that for a good 10 minutes. Switch ignition off and kick the bike a few times. This will cause the oil pump to rotate and any and all residual oil will also come out.

            Measure up, and fill only till the prescribed amounts.

            And remember to kick the bike a few times before starting, since all the oil has been drained. The pump shaft will start pumping it again when you kick it with the ignition off.

              piston valve

              I got the RE customer service involved and they were quick to turnaround and fix the issue. I explained the problem and the RE Engineer rode the bike around and determined the problem to be a damaged piston valve in the carburettor. He explained that gaps in the air-filter box had let in dust into the carb chamber and that destroyed the piston valve. He put in silica gel around the resonator box to shield it from the dust and replaced the piston valve. The problem has been solved now and I was quite impressed with REs response in the matter.

              One thing I noticed about the new UCE Electras was that they've started coming out with a completely new air filter boxes. It is larger and well-encased as opposed to mine which is about a year old now. Perhaps they fixed a bug in the old bikes and the earlier owners were never informed of this change. I'm trying to source the new air-filter box for my bike, still a spares problem at the service center. Thanks everyone on xBhp for their response on this.

                Oh, they also drained the excess engine oil out and remeasured and poured it back in. No more leaks so far

                  @vjeltz. Buddy can you please let me know the exact component that you got replaced. As i live in a remote village, & have no direct access to RE's engineers, I'll have to source the component from delhi.
