  • Queries & Concerns Related to my new P180 UG4

    Hi Friends,

Returning after a long time to XBHP . Things have a changed a lot & in the meantime (4 years) I changed 4 different bikes but still came back to the P180 but this time instead of UG3 its the new UG4 Version. Some days ago I went for the first service of my bike & I noticed a very new thing. Firstly that Bajaj has changed the service intervals from 2.5k Kms. to 5k Kms. & Secondly now they have their own range of Engine Oils manufactured by HP (Like For TVS its BP & Hero Honda its IOL).
Now coming to my main question. The service book says that the engine oil needs to be replaced at 10k Kms. & topped up every 5k Kms. whereas the Guy at the Bagga Link, Karol Bagh, New Delhi, Service centre told me that; "We suggest you to change the engine oil on every service; i.e.; 5k Kms. even if the manual says 10k. The Bajaj DTS-i oil is PURE SYNTHETIC OIL but which oil can last for 10k Kms."... To this my answer was MOTUL (Of Course).. "He told me that the price of Bajaj Oil is Half as compared to Motul's price, so now you can understand what I am trying to tell you."

Q1: Is the Bajaj DTS-i Oil Pure Synthetic Oil as Claimed by the Service Manager or its blended or plain mineral oil?

Q2: Was the service guy correct in suggesting to change oil at every 5k kms. instead of topping up at 5k & changing at 10k Kms. as said in the service manual?

Q3: I am also facing issues in changing gears; i.e. ; they are very hard as compared to UG3, I think so, but on the other end let me also tell you that my last bike prior to this UG4 was a Honda Unicorn so there is a very high possibility that I am finding issues coz I was earlier using a Honda & there is hell lot of difference between the gearshifts of the two? What do you say?

Q4: Last but not the least; I am looking to replace the stock filters with the k&n filters made specifically for pulsars & also looking to change the spark plugs from conventional to iridium ones. So my query is that would fitting any of these void the warranty of the bike?

Waiting for your positive views on these questions.
Also I would be coming out with the initial review of my bike after I complete 2.5k kms.

    Cheers...

Bajaj oil has got mixed reviews from people. Most of them hated it

Q2: Was the service guy correct in suggesting to change oil at every 5k kms. instead of topping up at 5k & changing at 10k Kms. as said in the service manual?

Oil is supposed to be changed at roughly 3000kms. Only the full synthetic oils last 5000kms or so.

Pulsars have smoother gearboxes from the UG3 edition onwards. The problem with your bike would either be old/bad engine oil, excessively loose clutch. Do not compare brands here. Its pointless. If you ride my bike you will see that the gearshifts are smoother than the RTR or any HH bike for that matter. You just have to change the oil at 2500kms and adjust clutch properly.

Q4: Last but not the least; I am looking to replace the stock filters with the k&n filters made specifically for pulsars & also looking to change the spark plugs from conventional to iridium ones. So my query is that would fitting any of these void the warranty of the bike?

K&N will void the warranty. But there always is a workaround to these things. Go ahead with the filter and the spark plugs. Just that whenever you have to claim warranty or insurance, just install the stock parts.
PS: Do NOT expect tremendous gain in power by installing all this. K&N with proper jetting will only lead to a very marginal difference in power. It is actually better throttle response that people interpret as increase in power. Just make sure you get the right sized jet and install the filter directly on the carb and remove the stock airbox.

Waiting for your positive views on these questions.
Also I would be coming out with the initial review of my bike after I complete 2.5k kms.

Change your oil between 1.5k-2k kms. Dont listen to bajaj.. No oil lasts for 10k or even 5k in a motorcycle engine.
My advice shift to motul 3000+ 15w50.
And keep your bike stock at least till the run-in period.

            well.. same as above..

            1. No oil lasts more than 3K km. bajaj oil is crap.. go for motul. remember the engine oil rating (15W50??) for your bike while choosing oil. this is very important.
            2. gofor any changes after 5K km completed on bike.
            3. Iridium spark plug.. very good.. for pickup and smooth combustion. can change them once you complete around 3-4K. keep the old spark plug for emergency spares. remember to tell mechanic everytime.. do not rub the sparkplug tip. Do not adjust the gap. ONly clean with petrol at max.
            4. K&N, not sure.. I would suggest wait for some more time and then go for it..
in step wise process. you will know, doing things one at a time, which change is good for your bike and which is not

            ride on..

              additionals

              1. I hope, you already know, go for iridium plug model number specific to your bike only.
              2. there is a dedicated P180 ownership thread. read through it, plenty of data and asking your queries there can also help.

Thanks for all the suggestions Pavan.. But my only query in regards to the Bajaj Oil is that is it Synthetic or Blend or Plain Mineral Oil...
Well I don't know about the Bajaj Oil But I was earlier using Motul Fully Synthetic Priced Roughly Around Rs. 900 which used to last for 10K Kms. but still I used to get the oil changed at 7K Kms. I personally wouldn't like to use the Bajaj Oil but the only other option I get at their service centre is Mac Oil from BP which I know is plain mineral oil. If I get my own oil then the warranty will get void. Worst is that the only Bajaj Service Centre I liked in Delhi - NCR is the Bagga Link, Karol Bagh Centre. I don't know why the Bajaj service manual says topping up of oil at 5k & changing at 10k kms. as this can only be in case of fully synthetic oils.
There is one thing that I noticed after first oil change that the bike is performing better, donno how, if the pil isn't good.
For the gearshift, I'll get the clutch adjusted today itself coz even finding neutral is creating issues.
Apart from that the K&N filter I was talking about is the new filter launched for Pulsars by K&N which can replace the stock filters but I'm not considering any mods to the bike till 12k Kms.

                & Thanks for your response...

Tell them you changed the oil a few kms ago. I used to do the same, although back then the Bajaj service centre in my town used castrol activ4T.

The K&N filter specific for pulsar is yet to be reviewed. Since it is a replacement filter, it will be easier to use. Cannot comment on the need for jetting on it and also the gain in performance because of it as I have not used it and haven't seen it on anyone's bike either

Bro, The main issue is that if U tell them that I got the oil changed from outside, they simply tell you that if U don't get the oil changed on every service we'll have to mention that in the service book, which in turn will create problems during warranty claim from the co. ... ...

Well, you just need to change the service centre then. Befriend some guys among the so called service advisor people and you're good to go.

These is total crap.I have never changed the Oil in my regular services(barring first 2).I always do it outside.they never questioned me,and I still get things replaced under warranty. They are just fooling with you.Call your area manager and tell him,"You want to change Oil at lesser interval,so you need to do it outside"...

The oil is semi-synthetic. It's a rebadged HP oil, I assume.

Q2: Was the service guy correct in suggesting to change oil at every 5k kms. instead of topping up at 5k & changing at 10k Kms. as said in the service manual?

They will suggest a lot of things. So will the company. The safest bet is to let them change the oils. I went to Suman Bajaj in Noida because they're the least bit nagging. When I told them I dont want my oil changed at 2nd service (5000kms) they said ok. They didn't say my warranty would have any problems. Anyway, the oil sucks ad I never used it for more than 1500kms. I always stuck to Motul. Then at third, I took a bottle for Motul 7100FS which was graded at 20W50 and I showed it to Bthe SVC guys and they agreed to put it in and ticked the box in the service page which said i had used other 20W50 grade oil. I'm sure Bagga Link won't do that cause I had asked them this earlier.

It's the oil, man. Use Motul 5100 and you'll know the difference.

Both K&N and iridium plugs will void your warranty. However, just don't let them find it out. Use your stocks whenever you visit SVC's

Let me add that in my experience, the Motul semi-synth oils were best. Many of us (ref: 180 owner's thread) noticed that fully synth oils evaporated mysteriously within some 2000kms.
Also, I have seen the Bajaj oil last for 10K in my colleague's bike. He isn't that savvy and he was ok with the hardship. His bike is in equally good condition. But for those who seek a smoother performance in general, Motul is the way to go.
