  • DTS-i on P200 and P220

I own a P200 and a P220, and have done this test on both bikes :
    - pull and take the left spark plug chop off the spark plug
    - start the engine, and rev-up to 8000 rpm

    the result :

    - on P200 : at about 6000 rpm and above, the engine would not run smoothly, sounded like there was faulty ignition

    - on P220 : the engine still ran smoothly up to 9000 rpm with no strange sign of faulty ignition at all

Can somebody explain the difference ? is it due to a more intelligent CDI on P220 ? Some mechanics said the reason of cutting off the ignition at 6000 rpm on P200 was to avoid overheating that could damage the engine internal parts. So why doesn't this reason apply to P220 ?
P200 : objects in the mirror are rapidly getting smaller and out of sight

      What exactly is chopping off?

chopping off means removing the spark plug cap --- right??

        is your P220 DTS-i of DTS-Fi

200 does not run properly after 6000 rpm beacause around that RPM range there is a swap in ignition mapping. why this does not happen in 220-- i can't comment as i don't have a 220. 220 guys may help here.

If i remember correctly, the two spark plugs do not work simultaneously for engine overheat protection. Only one works at a time based on the engine RPMs. At lower RPMs i'm guessing both the spark plugs work, as the RPMs increase, one is cut off. This is what i know. Experts maybe able to shed more light on this.

Try removing the right spark plug for the P220 and check what happens.

on 200 ignition timing goes for a toss after 6k revs with single plug. so combustion was less than optimal. Due to the bigger bore/different valves or things like that on 220 a decent combustion is happening with single plug upto 9k revs. I think p200 have a lesser red line as well?(I am not sure.)
