  • Help Needed : Universal Gear Indicator

    Heloo All,

I took delivery of my TBTS just 3 weeks back, and have clocked 428 KM until now. Now I won't use the cliched adjectives about ride quality or engine pull seen countless no. of times. I'll just say this- It is the best thing that happened to me in a long time. Only a RE rider knows about the bond between the man and the machine. I have fallen in mad love with my "Eliana". Call me mad or immature but from 2nd week onwards of taking delivery, every now and then the thought of giving my Eliana some sort of "jewellery" in the form of led fog lights or higher wattage headlamp keeps creeping in my mind now and then. I have been able to reason with myself till now, but thats not the point. One thing that I have noticed that with a torquey engine like this I unknowingly start to ride uphill in top gear. Every now and then on the road I think if only there were some kind of display to show the current gear i'm in. And then I came across this on ebay-

Red Universal Digital Gear Indicator for Motorcycle New | eBay

The package contains the display unit, two hall sensors and a tiny magnet. According to the seller, the magnet has to be pasted with araldite to the gearshift lever and the two hall sensors either side of the pedal on the engine housing. The display is connected to the two hall sensors , +12V supply, Ground and the neutral switch connection. Allegedly the display will show the current gear no, which has been picked up by the hall sensors from the magnetic field change due to pedal movement.

Now I would like to ask you guys the big question- Is it a good idea to install this thing on Eliana ? Another question is the circuit is straightforward, but I am a bit confused with the neutral connection. TBTS neutral connection switches to ground or live ? Then do I have to disconnect the existing neutral light connection and connect the neutral switch to this display only ? And where the hell is the neutral switch of TBTS ???

O gurus of the two-wheeler nirvana, this insignificant disciple is asking for enlightment...............

Even I was thinking on the same lines a few days back and found Blue Universal Digital Gear Indicator for Motorcycle | eBay which is cheaper but seems to be of same quality of the one you've mentioned.
I kept the link as bookmark and thought of going into it later as I don't have any knowledge of the electricals(I can't even figure out which is the neutral wire).
the thought which kept me from buying it is "will it really work?"
also I couldn't figure where and how to fit the magnet and the sensors.

We just need a mechanism to make the magnet move over the sensors. I reckon we can fix a strip of aluminum to the shifter pivot bolt and fix the magnet to that instead of fixing the magnet to the shift lever itself. The +12 V wire can be connected to the ignition switch , and the ground can be connected to a earthing bolt on the chasis, the confusing thing is the neutral connection. I have ordered the display unit on ebay. should reach me within 15-20 days.

At the outset, congrats on the new aquisition, surely its an owners pride and I can feel the spirit from ur words.

Hi, am no expert in this, this is my assumption:

Its working on the basis of moving magnet proximity between the two sensors. I guess this one need some fine tuning in placements to get the correct readings. As shown in the listing pics, u need to fabricate a plate to fix the sensors near the shift lever. U need to use a screw rather than the heat resistant glue as it may come off due to heat and vibration.

Wiring seems simple, and very much detailed. The neutral switch is inside the gear box or near by, you can figure out by identifying the wires coming out of the stator (magneto) cover. Usually its triggered with the ground. So once u figure out the neutral wire just splice it with the white wire. For resetting the counter neutral wire is required.

Do as in the diagram and let us know the progress.

              Good luck

Thanks sajjt, I really appreciate your valuable input on this matter. To be specific about the neutral connection, I want to find out whether the display unit expects some incoming signal on the white wire or sends out outgoing signals. Now as per my understanding, splicing the existing neutral switch connection should do the trick in both the cases if the unit works like I think it works. If think if the unit sends out signal, the circuit should look like this.

And if it expects signal, it should work if the setup is something like this,

Now can you guys please provide your perspective on the matter ? I want to know if the system works as per my understanding or not. Waiting anxiously for your valuable feedback............

Oh, I thought u must've finished by now

Whats stopping u from trying the way u've said? The neutral wire is sending a reset pulse by hitting the ground AFAIK. Have a try and lets know the progress.
