    Pulsar 150 UG4 Engine Problem

    Hi
    I have a Oct 2009 Pulsar 150 & it has clocked more than 24000 kms. Got it serviced about 3 months back & has driven about 700kms since.

    Today I felt some loss of power in engine so opened up the Spark plugs to see if there ws some problem with the tuning of carb. To my surprise there was OIL on the threads of the Spark plugs & the tip was black. Cleaned & put it back, retuned the carb.
    I went to my regular roadside mechanic & told him about the problem. He revved the bike at very high RPM, & there was some White smoke from the exhaust. He told me that the Piston & Rings need to be replaced but it is not a complete engine overhaul(confused). Said would cost about 1500.

    I request fellow members to advise me regarding what to do?? I though the engine should last more than 24k as I always got it serviced in time??

    Note: Got the engine head cleaned & Valves replaced during the last servicing.
    The engine oil is at the minimum level when seen through side.

      • why have you replaced valves in last servicing?
      • have you replaced valves with same road side mechanic?
      • has he done proper valve lapping?
      • was the job done in front of your eyes?
      • if the valves are not leaking then changing the piston rings might solve the problem.
      • have you also replaced stem seals during valve replacement.?

        *Yes, I got valves replaced by the same road side mechanic.
        *He grinded the valves & they were fitting completely in engine head(as I saw it, though I'm no engineer)

          Does replacing piston & rings mean complete engine overhaul?? almost, but to change piston-you need to either change cylinder also or do rebore.
          one should never do engine jobs in piecemeal, it increases the effort and cost. if opened once, one should always check everything- piston, rings, valves, crank shaft etc.

            Actually the engine head was opened bcoz it was leaking from the side cap. At that time I was told about the valves. Didnt expect the piston & rings to go down before 30k.

            The piston cant be fit into the same cylinder???
            Does a rebore affects engine or performance in some way??

            @prince: I read our thread for engine rebuild. Acc to that, you got a rebore. Kindly guide me about performance & eficiency. I want my bike to peform as stock. No mods. Thanks.!!

            What would be the approximate cost for both, rebore or new??

              The piston cant be fit into the same cylinder??? No, without reboring, you can't change piston, otherwise replace entire set of block piston, or just change only piston rings.
              Does a rebore affects engine or performance in some way?? it all depends on quality of workmanship, if the mechanic doing is really skillfull and knows what he is doing and also has good machine/equipment, a rebore can be as good as a new block piston. on my bike, reboring has given me results equal to new block piston. so it all depends how it is done.regarding performance, reboring increases the bore diameter and therefore total volume, so if you tune it right, you will get a very slight increase in power, so if you notice carefully, you might be able to feel it. but in most cases, the difference in power in so negligible and miniscule that its better not to even discuss about power gain by simple reboring.

              @prince: I read our thread for engine rebuild. Acc to that, you got a rebore. Kindly guide me about performance & eficiency. I want my bike to peform as stock. No mods. Thanks.!! if you want some bump in power, then you can try by doing a rebore of maximum size possible, then put in a K&N filter and rejetting, and then may be a free flow filter.

              What would be the approximate cost for both, rebore or new?? i had done it way back, so don't remember exactly but it will depend upon what all parts will be changed.

                Actually I live in a small city so m doubtful about reboring work. The service Center guys straight away told me get the whole thing replaced & quoted a price of about 4000 inc. labour. Will talk to my mechanic & see what he plans to do.

                  Got the bike checked after sometime.. There was no oil on spark plug & I couldnt notice any smoke. When I asked the mechanic he said that bike could have been over or its because of poor quality petrol. Does a 4 stroke bike gets Over??

                  There has been a noise like I'm running on choke. What could be the cause for that??

                  One more thing.. I have read that oil filter be changed with every oil change. But I was told by service center person that Oil filter is inside Need not be changed. Is it so in Pulsar???

                      the noise could be due to incorrect ignition timing or improper valve/tappet clearance or setting.
                      Oil strainer and centrifugal filter must be cleaned every 10,000kms or replaced if damaged.
