  • Help needed for my 2005-Jan P150 UG2

I have been facing a number of problems with my almost-4-yrs-old P150, since the past 1.5 yerars.
    First some facts:
    • I have always serviced my bike at the authorized Sai Service Service station at Andheri (W)
    • Service my bike on an average every 3 months
    • Use only Castrol Active 20W-40 engine oil, and change the oil every 2K kms approx
    • Ride approx 32-35 kms everyday from Santacruz to Powai and back (heavry traffice mostly, needless to say)
    • One trip to Pune every month
    • Use regular fuel
    • Have clocked approx. 29.5K kms

Now the problems that I have been facing since a year and a helf are:
      • Since the past 2 months, there is a loud tapping sound from the left side of the bike as soon as I start moving my bike in the 1st gear.. I am unable to ascertain whether it comes from the chain, the tappet or the engine (please pardon my ignorance if I am wrong about any of these locations). The sound is at its loudest while starting from the stop position and decreses in intensity with increasing gear and speed. But it returns in all its hoarse glory as I step down the gears. The sound never disappears completely. One thing I noticed was that during cruising, if I press the clutch, the sound disappears completely. It reappears as soon as I release the clutch. Perhaps this could help in diagnosing the problem?
      • Occasionally, after driving for about 30 mins, particular in moderate to heavy traffice, when I try to revv a little high (upto 6K max; usually during overtaking), the gear slips. This happens from 4th to 3rd or 3rd to 2nd gear only. As I said, it happens occasionally, but its always unnerving, especially while trying to make a quick getaway overtaking a bus or something.
      • So far, I have not replaced the clutch plates/spark plugs/fuel or oil filters. I had asked the CC guys whether the gear slipping could be a problem with the clutch plate. But he said that it does not require a removal yet. Please tell me whether any of these parts need to be replaced as part of their normal end-life replacement. (As mentioned before, I have done about 29.5k kms).

Please help me out with these problems guys. I have a service appointment again for this Friday, and I want to be sure that I have an educated conversation about my problem with the attendant, or perhaps even speak to the service mechanic. And as far as my experience with these guys goes, they would never know a serious problem even if sits on their head and stares at their face!

reg the gear slips and false neautrals, it a very common problem and even an living with the same....this model gear box in special, u have depress the gear lever fully and get it locked in the gears..when we overtake, we normaly dont do that.. also take the bike to your service centre and tell that you are having frequent false neutral problems... this normalyy should happen between some particular gears. note that down.. not sure about the other problems though... i have come across the front brake problem... but that was due to the problem in the routing of the brake fluid cable...check whether any abnormal tension in that when turning the handle from one way to another...

Engine noise,,,naah.. nay senior members ??

i have told this to the SS guys, including specifying the particular gears which slip. they dutifully note it down, but within a couple of days after taking my bike home, the problem raises its dirty head again. As for an abnormal tension in the steering, there isnt any. I checked that too. Its still the disc brake I think.

First, try another service station/independent mechanic.

For the Disk brake problem : Have you ever replaced brake pad & brake fluid ? Sometimes the entire assembly may have got rusted due to the water vapour content since you've never changed the fluid. Try bleeding the disk brake.

Also change the sparks & air filters.

well...i had my bike serviced last friday from the same guys, but i guess this time I got lucky! They actually seem to have finally done some work on my bike, cos da brake problems gone. the sound from the rear turned out to be a loose chain after all. Also changed the air filters. Now da bikes finally sounding good-after a long hiatus of two years.
I had changed the disc pads and oil 2 years ago. come to think about it, the problem started just after that! you think i should ask them to check for rusting at my next service as u mentioned?
Also, what is the standard time for replacing the spark plugs and clutch plates for P150? I have been thru the forums, but couldnt come to a decisive conclusion to this query.....

Since you've never changed your sparks, replace it as soon as possible.

ok will do that. Any recommendations with repect to the brand. I have been reading a lot about Iridium ones, which most seem to agree that they dont make any real difference with respect to the price difference. Which ones then should I go ahead with? and what would it cost in Mumbai?

i didn't face any prob as u said about the front tight issue in by bike mate....
                      i own a ug3 digital babe....
regarding the sound, i faced the same prob as u mentioned, but i don no both are same or not.... anyways, let me tell u about mine... there is a thing called "scissor gear loading" in the engine... i don no for what purpose it is used... but if that piece is not fitted properly, then it will cause the engine noise... i guess yours is a non digital version, so just ask your cc guy whether there is anything such has to be corrected in your bike....
then regarding gear slippage... ask ur cc guy to check the "gear guide"...
but mate, mine is a digital version and yours is a non digital version, these solutions may not fit for u... but just try it out...
                      good luck....
