The customs guys are normally one step ahead of us and can spring umpteen surprises during the clearance process. People have tried under- invoicing, dismantling, minor damaging, showing as scrap etc etc, but every which way for customs its "Heads I win, Tails you lose".
Your uncle could probably bring the stuff on TR, whereby the rate is comparatively a little lesser for bikes & cars (its a lot more beneficial for household items). NO, TR does not mean he has to pack his bags for good. Its just that you can avail the TR facility once in 2 or 3 years, but continue with your job abroad. You could check the exact conditions on the Indian customs website or from a good clearing agent.
End of the day, importing a bike on your own is still a long & complicated project.Last edited by Haroon; 11-13-2008, 04:43 AM.

what about homologation .. isn't that required too after an import. I hear it's almost impossible for an individual to do unless you have some "contacts".

about homologation: (correct me if and wherever I am wrong)
1) if there was a homologation test happened in the past for the model being imported, new machines of the same model need not go through the process.
2) Also ARAI, the authority for homologation, does accept certain international bodies' certfication. That is another channel
3) fresh homologation is a tedious and expensive job for individuals.
