  • Pulsar 150 Overheating

My Pulsar 150 (black) is exactly 1 year old, I've done 4200 km.

Now, the problem is the overheating. I can feel the heat on my feet for even a short distance of 4 km it is accompanied by a burnt/charred smell. Replaced oil just a couple of days ago (Castrol) despite this there is excess overheating even in early morning (winter) moreover gear shifts are hard. It seems like there is intense pressure on the engine when I exceed 50-55 kmph. The servicing was done on the last week of December. Please help

    I reside in Navi Mumbai.

do you have any other problems apart from overheating, like loss of power, loss of pick-up, loss in top speed. too much white/black smoke, etc??

      any strange noises from engine?

does this problem arise after last servicing.?

      have you done any modifications?

      fall?

Significant loss of pick-up and power, Bike struggles beyond 4k RPM where there is increased noise (which usually occours when riding hard). I have not exceeded 60 kmph since I've faced this issue.

        Despite servicing it is continuing.

        No Modifications done.

        No Fall.

There is a dominant burnt smell for short distances.

this reply may look strange. . i had this same problem in my pulsar 150. . I checked tappets , clutch plates , oil pumps etc. . Still the prob was on. Svc guys said overheating was normal but i felt the burning smell too while i was standing in signals. . . Finally my friend asked me to try fully synthetic oil . I ve tried motul 300v FS everything was Disappeared but still i dono wt was the reason. . To test this i switched to castrol mineral - oh man ! That prob came again . Now i'm oly using fully synthetic having no problems at all. . Gurus put ur knowledge wat would be the reason ?

Bodkin Arrow - What's the color of your spark plug? Good & clean pics on the bottom part of spark plug will help us understand what's going on within the engine.

                    +1

Also check for wrong fitting of spark plug, Yes it might be inserted correctly but the grooves might be worn out or pushed with pressure resulted in slanting of a spark plug....Results in straining of engine at mid level RPM...Also fuming of engine as if burnt smell arises....

                    Hope this helps...
Remove both of the spark plugs and insert it slowly ensuring the fitting is tight inserted without pressure.

UG 4.5 is recommended to use 20w50 grade oil hope you are using the same.
Also, follow what aargee & eshan says..

first of all usual checks should be done-
                        1. check tyre pressure and correct if required. front-28 rear-32.
                        2. very important - check chain tightness/slack. a chain too tight may give similar problems. check if the chain is too tight. and check at all locations throughout the length of chain.
                        3. @ Honda_CBF: castrol activ 4t 20w40 is not a very good oil, i agree, but not that bad. you can say it is an average oil. and it should not cause any problems in Pulsar150, though it may not give you some benifits other costly oils give, but still it is not bad, average quality oil. i also have used it extensively earlier.
                        4. like what "aargee" said, pics of spark plugs will also help in giving proper solution.
                        5. @ Honda_CBF : interchanging 20w40 & 20w50 grade oils will not cause such serious problems.
now lets tackle the problem --
                        • as said earlier, if tyre pressure and chain tightness is ok.
                        • check if either front or rear brakes are too tight, check by rotating the tyres while on center stand. wheels should rotate freely and there should not be much of a "grinding sound".
                        • check both wheel bearings and sprocket bearings.
                        • the idea of checking the above is to find out if there is any obstruction in the bike to run properly.
                        • i am assuming you have not put any mudflap of cardboard in front of engine, like many people do in rainy season. as it obstructs the flow of air to engine.
                        • now the engine is overheating and there is a burning smell from engine, burning smell is the smell of burning clutch plates caused either by clutch plate slipping or engine overheat.
                        • such situations also arise when you ride too slow for too long like in bumper to bumper traffic, so that is not a problem, or stop go situations in hill climbing. make sure you are not in these two situations.
                        • also check oil level?
                        • also check if oil is leaking from somewhere, because burning oil will also produce sound. if there is oil on or around engine or gearbox, when it gets heated, it burns and give burning smell.
now you also need to tell us--
                        • is there too much smoke from exhaust?
                        • you said there is strange noise from engine, you need to identify the noise, what type of sound is it? and from where it is coming??
                        • you also have to tell whether this problem started after doing servicing or in between??
                        • you said one year old pulsar and only 4000 kms done, it means you must not have done all free servicing properly? correct me if i am wrong..
                        • is this burning smell coming after you started the bike after letting it stand untouched for months??
                        • drain out all oil and replace by castrol power1 purchased only from castrol bike zone (lot of duplicate products in market) and see if burning smell is still there.
                        • if yes, go to a highway and take the bike to 80-90 kmph and check its performance. report back.

                          @ prince,
when first time i poured castrol activ it made my bike
                          -'slow-reving'
                          -harder gear shift
                          -burning smell when ridden hard.
                          -cold start problem
All these issues were also noticed by a friend of mine (pulsar ug3 owner)
then we both drained this oil very early.
                          .
20w50 is recommended by BAL for UG 4.5 so if 20w40 is used then overheating will surely occur.
                          .
May be this oil is average by your standards but mine says its worst (also comparing with price)
sorry for disagreement bro but its just my opinion by experience.

                              Fried.....

                              Change and see the difference...
Also insert them in the right manner....Please dont try Iridium (atleast now). For checking stock ones are better.... also look at the dimension
One is 0.7mm and the other is 0.8mm.

Ensure you affix them in the right manner.

                              0.8mm is left side
                              0.7mm is right side

The above specs are very important please change accordingly.
NGK are avaliable in yellow color box costing 80Rs and 76rs respectively.

If you see the NGK box it will be shown on the 0.8mm on the left side and the 0.7 on the right. Bright yellow made in japan.
