Help: Clutch burnt in New Pulsar 220

    Help: Clutch burnt in New Pulsar 220

    Hi friends, atlast after 6 months of viewing threads and forums as a guest i have now joined xbhp yesterday.
    The main reason is i have a pulsar 220 which is an year old and has done 4000 kms, yesterday i went for my first paid service. The supervisor (suman of kolkata probike service) asked for any problems, i said that my bike feels a bit rough after 4k rpm and it seems that it dosent likes to cross 6k rpm mark. He said your clutch is burnt, balancer needs loading n all, i was shocked to hear my clutch gone at 4000 kms, but i asked him to atleast see the bike and verify. He started my bike up revved it to its peak and some smoke was seen from the exhaust which i saw for the first time it was minimal, but i dont know why. He smiled and said you see your clutch is burning which is making the mobil to burn hence the smoke, he even said various things like if you dont do it now your engine needs to be opened, the burnt mobil will effect your engine, etc, etc and suggested to get the balancer be done something which will cost rs 1100 along with mobil needed to be replaced. I some how managed to refuse this and did just the normal service.
    But i want to know whatever he said is true? and why was smoke seen from exhaust?
    Please provide your valuable suggestions friends and thank you all in advance.

      AFAIK clutch plate burning wont produce smoke, the smoke may be because of carbon deposition on the spark..and do wait for experts reply..

        Erm not too sure but:

        1) AFR (air to fuel ratio) tuning of the carburetor is not right.. probably on too lean..
        2) The inlet and exhaust valve tappets may not be set correctly.
        3) Burnt clutch in just 4000kms seems highly unlikely unless your bike ran out of engine oil. revving it too the max and mild black smoke is due to the carbon deposition and not the clutch..
        4) may be there is a CDI problem.
        5) Check the engine oil level.. if it is on low mark then that might also lead to the bike getting highly vibey and potentially cease the engine.
        6) Air filter may be clogged...

        besides these i can't think of anything wrong since your model is not an FI one..

          No i just poured motul ss a few days back and checked the engine oil level its a bit above the upper level mark. But yes my airfilter was dirty.
          Regarding a lean mixture...I cant decide that its lean or rich. But my bike feels a bit lazy to rev above 5k rpm mark, nd a bit too much vibration is felt above 5k rpm.

              Hi Bro first i would like to talk about suman. he is a punk. he is list knowing person about bikes. i dont know why bajaj wouldn't fire him. and don't trust him.
              only talk to subrata sinha (manager) or arindam. and don't forget to put a complain on bajajauto website. one man can solve your prob in kol pbk,
              service guy SUDIP.he is in ninja department. if possible talk to him.

                Regarding a lean mixture...I cant decide that its lean or rich.
                You can get an idea from the spark plugs.... Open it up and see how they look..wet and sooty = Rich or extreme white = lean. Should be close to a grey ring for a apprx good tune.

                Also soot on the exhaust will give it away....

                although not as dangerous as have low oil, high level of oils arent good either. Get it right as per manual ....But I dont think thats causing it.
                Looks more like a fueling issue... But if new bike is burning oil, they should be checking it very well under warranty...

                  i went to the svc last week they opened the clutch, they say its becuming hard and thats the first stage of a burning clutch...nd they say the balancer is gone..total expenses is rs 2500...!!

                    Clutch Plates Burnt? How is it possible in a Wet type clutch? I am sure you had enough engine oil?

                    Even if it burns due to excessive heat with no engine oil condition, then how come that smoke come out of exhaust?

                      @sujit singh Are clutch plates under warranty?... (I doubt it though) and do you have another dealer/Service center where you can go to? Probably fix the fueling issue and see if it helps before investing money is clutch and all.. ?

                        Smoke from exhaust can be due to various reasons, most common would be improper state of tune (AFR) of the carb. Considering that your bike doesnt rev properly past 5 or 6 k rpm, it can be pretty much confirmed that the AFR isnt proper.

                        Smoke from exhaust has nothing to do with the clutch burning issue. (as far as i know)

                        Burnt clutch is nothing but overheating of your clutch plate leading to excessive wear, this is due to improper operation of clutch or due to the faulty actuation system.

                          Smoky exhaust

                          Smoke from exhaust as correctly said could be that the mixture is rich...to confirm that jes pop your spark plug(s) out and check their condition. If its black and sooty then it is too rich.
                          Also if its smokin and the smoke is black then it means its burnin oil also evidenced by oil deposits on the spark plug. Burning oil could mean...
                          - the combustion chamber is not sealed cos of blown piston rings.
                          - your valves are leaking.

                          If there is any issue with clutch then it needs to be tackled separately... If the clutch is indeed wearing out then check for debris on the oil filter.
