    Found a washer inside engine head

    Hi all,

    I have a Fiero f2(2003 model). Six months back I had got the engine rebored after driving for about 80K kms. I have clocked around 8K after rebore. Last week I gave my bike for usual service. About a week after service, after about 500kms the bike did not start one fine day.

    When I took the bike to the mechanic he told me that there could be some timing chain problem and the engine head had to be removed. When he removed the engine there was a washer on the piston! The washer was smashed like a pulp, I don't know how a washer could have made its way into engine head. Now because of this the valves are bent and they have to be replaced. There are some small damages on the piston and I don't know what else would have got damaged.

    Mechanic doesn't have a clue about the washer. Is there a possibility that he might have left a washer by accident while doing some tappet adjustments during service? Is there a way a washer can make it way to engine head via silencer?

    I am not an expert or any thoughts on this?

      Yes the chances of him leaving the part inside by mistake is possible. Happens with doctors too...
      No, a washer cannot find its way inside the combustion chamber and heads through the silencer...

      You can take it to the person who did the engine job (i think he is the same mech you are referring above)... Tell him about its presence and his mistake, keep it as simple as possible... and next time you can be present when the actual job takes place...

        Yeah, he is the same mechanic and he does agree that he might have made a mistake and is ready it to do all the repair work for free. Thats not an issue. But what puzzles me is how did the bike run for around 8.5K kms after rebore if there was a washer inside the head. I presume the washer was there somewher inside the head stuck for 8k Kms and only got dislodged later. Could it be possible?

        Mechanic is also not sure how the washer could have made its way into the engine head.

          Do you have the pics? May be its the valve that got bent first (due to incorrect tappet setting) and its washer found the way to the head...

            IMHO, do not do a rebore job; just buy a new cylinder piston kit; gives peace of mind for next 80K kms!!!

              I don't have the pics. But you may have a point, there is a possibility of improper valve setting.

              It is already done but next time I don't plan to rebore or change the piston block. I will just sell the bike and buy a new one thats the best option I feel.
