  • RPM vs Headlight vs Horn.

How is RPM related to horns?

Okay, here's the scenario. I went to a local shop to buy engine oil for my dad's bike. This question of mine stems from that shop.

Customer (on scooter - Priya) - The horn doesn't sound.
    Mechanic - Change it!
    C - Why change? 1st check it...
    .
    .
    .
    .
    (~15 min later)
M - Okay. Wires were loose. It works.
    C - Hmm... I'll take a T.D and confirm.

C - It works sometimes only!
When I switch on the headlight, it doesn't sound. Why?
    M -
    .
    .
    .
    (~10 min later)
M - The wiring is faulty!
C - Are you nuts? Wait, let me see.
<!-- He wrings the throttle hard, revs it so hard that the scooter starts puffing white smoke. But, the horn sounds with the headlight on! -->

    C - See, it sounds.
    M -
M - Wait, I'll call my uncle. He knows better.
    .
    .
    .
    .
    (~20 mins.... Nobody came.)

Since, I'd already lost close to an hour in this drama and my mom started calling me every 5 min, I decided to leave.
What could be the reason for that man's problem?
    What maybe the solution?

    Update:-
A few senior members said that 'Priya' scooter didn't have a battery. So, that being faulty is ruled out.

Certainly the battery. But this should go in the humor thread..

If you are lucky - Your battery needs juice. In case of maintenance free battery, buy a new battery.
In case of stock battery, just go to a battery shop for putting distilled water and check the readings

If you are unlucky, your alternator is dying which is why its not charging the battery.
        Replance the alternator

Engine revs the dynamo that generates power & charges the battery that powers the horns

Short circuit or improper grounding + this guy should not be having a fuse; so things go unnoticed; add to that the battery is weak.

More power generated to power the headlight as well as supply the battery

He says the scooter was a 'Priya'. If I recall correctly 'Priya' was a clone of the early Bajaj Chetak, therefore, it does not have a battery. So the horn would not work unless the engine was running and ditto for the headlight.

Ya it sounds funny, but the problem also is unique.

It means Headlight is eating all power generated by alternator in low rpm & horn getting nothing resulting in weak or no sound . But in high rpm power is high enough to run both headlight & horn .

So that means, if the wiring is changed, the problem maybe solved. Because I don't see any reason why the headlight should eat all the power generated. There has to be fault in the electrical circuit only.
                    Isn't it?

The earlier scooters Bajaj M-50, Bajaj Super, Lambratta etc didn't had any battery. Its directly powered by the dynamo. High revving will produce more power, brighter will be the headlight and more sound from horn. If the headlight n horn is used simultaneously, the power gets divided, headlight dims and horn weakens. Regarding the electrical circuit, it had very less technology and the wiring was straight forward. And wiring gets damaged over years!

Had and used dad's '87 model Bajaj Super!

No,The electricity generation at low RPM is not sufficient to run both headlight and horn simultaneously.
How much current do you expect from a puny Alternator of a Priya ?
