  • Carb tuning without the tacho

i read many articles on how to tune the carb which always mention set the engine at so and so rpm and stuff

how does one tune if u do not have a tacho in ur bike? my question wud be setting the idle speed rather than tuning....is it just set by the gut feeling or something else is involved?

yes something else is involved that is external tacho-meter.you can see it at service center or if one is experienced he can tune the bike without tacho as accurate as required rpm(+-50rpm)

if you're more interested to set the idle follow this...
start the bike, keep on lowering the idling RPM till you think the engine would stall
set it a tad above the point where your engine stalls.
Its the fusion of a two wheeled machine & a human being which creates a true biker.

Do the above after warming up your engine also setting too low idle speed when engine is warmed up can cause engine stalling in the first few kms after a cold start when throttle is closed, setting idle when cold leads to high idling after engine is warm

              @ abhijeet and Rashid,
i think thread starter wants to set idle (at higher rpm) for tuning purpose.

              @ thread starter,
when you ride around the city, you up-shift at a point. Now that point or little above that point is good to start. And without tacho you are totally dependent on engine sound.

well as far as i have learnt from the internet abt tuning(parts in RED is where i need the tacho)

*i first raise rpms(the no. doesnt matter so i dont need the tacho here)

*then i set it at leanest possible point without engine stalling(RPM decreases simultaneously and keeps varyingmight need the tacho here)

*to turn the screw to richer side till rpm becomes constant and rises a little(might need the tacho here)

*set the idle to about 1K rpm(need it here)

shut down and start again..shud start in a single kick
ride and feel the difference check symptoms and tune again for any problem

so please suggest if there is any alternative to the method i know for tuning without tacho
or i shud just go with the feel?

                thanks everyone for their replies

                  every single point is correct.
Only area you are asking for tacho is setting idle at 1k rpm (last step) that can be done by the method stated by abhijeet (i.e. setting idle at little more than just avoiding engine stall) the point where idle is uneven (seems like too low) but it doesn't stall is around 800 rpm.
And to set idle at 1.3k to 1.5k rpm, set idle so that engine doesn't stall even in half clutch position without throttle.
Btw, what bike you're tuning on?
