  • Noise when in fifth gear

    Hi ,
I am using pulsar 150 DTSi which 4 years old. From last 2 months I am having noise ( somewhat like friction ) when in fifth gear and I cross speed of 45. May be I just hear it above 45 as noise increases as I increase speed. There is no noise when bike is in other other gears ( 4th,3rd etc ) even I increase speed beyond 45. I tried to get it fixed twice but both times issue was not resolved by mechanic. Please help remove this noise or suggest a good place where I can show my bike in Pune.
    Thanks,
    Raj

    Topic Approved.

Has the bike been serviced regularly? Any accidents? Any other info you want to share? How much has the bike run and which year's model?

(Please give maximum details so that members can help you better, as their input is just what you type. They haven't inspected your bike personally, right?).

      Hi ,
Sorry for less details , will try to give maximum as I can.

Bike is 2008 model with around 60k run. It was run with long tours ( weekends around 250 km ) as well as daily city rides.

      2008 regular servicing
      2009 regular servicing
2010 irregular servicing ( had engine issue as bike run on less oil for long time , had to do work on piston )
2011 unused for almost 11 months ( not single KM )
2012 regular servicing ( changes valve , oil kit till have engine oil leak issue).Once I started reusing it , problem started withing month or two.

shown to one friend working at Bajaj as engg , he said problem is with chain sprocket but mechanic not able to find.

      No accidents.

      Thanks,
      Raj

My bike (HH Hunk 2008, 20k+ kms on odo) is also having similar problem, but in 3rd gear(only). I can feel increased vibes on foot rest, a grinding kinda noise which transforms to a howling noise when revved in the same gear. But this is not apparent when revved in the same gear with bike on central stand.

I've searched regarding this in many places, and from that I suspect it is due to damaged 3rd gear teeth, but I never bothered to show this to a mechanic. I don't think it is a sprocket issue as noise is only in one gear.

Waiting for experienced hands for their answers.

You also have the issue in 3rd gear?
But how rear chain tension produce noise only in 3rd gear?
I've read some one's post here that, XTreme/Hunk are having 3rd gear issues, but don't know how that FM came to this conclusion; many people out there with same issue on their Hunk/Xtreme?

Let us shoot this question in our Hunk/Xtreme ownership thread...!

i am also having a similar problem of noise only in fifth gear....something like gad gad gad gad...i am getting it rectified this sunday ...it is due to fifth gear input and output gear and/or their bearing being worn out.

ur problem may also be due to problem in third gear teeths or bearing. get it checked.

mohsin-09823839085 is a good mechanic in pune . u can call him. he is a specilist in pulsars, very good and knowledgable guy. will not cheat. my trusted mechanic. u can give my reference if u want.

one more thing- generally if te noise is like a friction or grinding, it is due to chain. u can check by removing the chain cover both lower and upper.

if the sound is something metallic like tak tak tak or gad gad gad, it is generally due to internal parts being worn out.

                I +1 princesirohi here.
Get the chain slack checked and see also about the timing chain, because they wont see those factors usually it will be small things that are difficult to notice.

guys.. i was completely surprised when i came across this thread.. even i have the same grinding noise but only in 3rd gear while accelerating.. all other gears are fine.. earlier i was planning to sell of the bike and hence did not think much of the problem.. but i finally realized that after 9 years with my pulsar 150 classic silver, its hard to part ways.. i sent a man back who had come with cash in his hand and apologized for cancelling the sale.. i thought that if the problem is related to gearbox, it must get very expensive to repair....

                  plz help

So there is enough members to form a club of people with "Noisy motorcycle gears"
I have read about this issue in some other threads, with info from there and responses here, I think it should be related to worn out gear teeth/bearing, but I never bothered to take it to service center as the noise is kinda bearable !

                    @ princesirohi
Did you get your issue resolved?

yup. we can ask his question in the thread...
btw, sometimes, the noise goes if i over lubricate the chain... but its not always...

no, waiting for parts to arrive, those buggers don't keep parts that are not frequently required.

does anyone have an idea how much it might cost to get rid of this problem??? i am kinda rejuvenating my pulsar. repainting the whole thing, and cleaning all the small but important parts.. getting fuel tank chrome plated, cleaned the fuel tap (was filled with black oily deposit.) cleaned the fuel tank inside out.. gonna get the carb cleaned from a garage in front of me... bajaj service center guys are pathetic.. then gonna repaint the engine, take care of electricals and stuff.. and the likes...
