  • Rear tyre Wobbles and Braking Issue

    I own HH Hunk 2008 with stock tyres(alloy wheels and tyres with tube).

    Yesterday, the rear tyre got punctured and i had to ride it sluggishly to the nearest Tyre Repair Shop(nearly 3 km). The tyre mechanic recovered a thin bolt(yeah, that's a bolt with tapered head and not a nail) and also shown me damage done to the tube and the tyre. The tyre has cut through along the side near rim to approx. 4 cm. and tube , of course was to be changed. In the repair process, he did treated it harshly(i mean on alloys, he should not have used that rod type tool that they use on regular rims as that could cause damage to alloys(correct me if i'm wrong)). When he reassembled the bike with new tube, i took a test drive and notice that theb brake drums get locked up for say, half a second and if i brake hard, the tyre also slides to the right side(that really worried me). Then i went back to the same mech and but he could not help with anything(he just told that this problem is coming because he has just aligned it and it'll go away as i ride for a few kms.). Today, I noticed a considerable amount of rear tyre wobble that increased further as the pillion also rode. What could be the reason of wobble ?

    Is it because of Brakes or damagerd tyre or alloys(if they are damaged) or alignment?

      change the tyre & get the alloy checked. Simple.

        From where can i get the alloys checked. I don't waana chhange the tyre unless i'm sure it is the root cause of problem. I feel more that the mechanic is to blame it , but tyre could also be the reason. I don't feel that new tyre is needed as the damage is not that much.

        I'd better stick this tyre only if tyre is only the potential problem.

          I also own a hunk 2011, recently done wheel alinement, because of feeling wobble at more then 90Kmph and in your case because of your mechanic did it hard, may be alignment gone bad, don't worry man you can go to any authorized HH service center, then will alinement the alloy very fast and easily...

            Thanks for the advice friend. Surely, i'll get it done. But i don't have more than 2 hours of free time till 26 May. HH Service center guys usually take more than 2 hours, so is it a good choice to go for external wheel aligners(only if they are really gona do it nicely).
            Is it safe to ride it just as it is till 26 May( i'll be riding nearly 100 kms. by then) or i should get it done ASAP ? Won't it be doing any damage to the bike ?

              I dont have any experience & idea about the external wheel aligners, If you don't have any choice then just don't drive faster I think up to 40-50 you can go, it will increase the wobble or will be dangerous for you on high speed, It will be good for you and for your bike to drive slow as much as you can (I think less then 40kmph it will be not possible), HH service center does not take much time, even they does not remove tyre to align the alloy, If you will reach early in the morning and able to get first they will take hardly 30minutes.....

                1. Has he inserted some other rubber casing or wall inside the tyre where its torn? Then that will cause wobbling.
                2. Is the tyre fixed back in same fit and direction of the tyre rotation when moving forward should be same as pointed by the arrow.
                3. You need to go to a professional itself, outside alginment wont be so perfect. They may add weights to adjust the balance.
                4. If none of these work, you may have to change to a new tyre.
                There are no short-cuts to any place worth going. So ride safe when you are treading uncharted roads.

                  Arnt the Hunk tyres tubeless?

                  *Assuming that you are using tubless tyres with tube in it.*

                  Check the seating of the bead, there is a circumferential mark along the wall of the tyre, just above the bead. If the tyre is seated correctly then this mark will stand 1~2mm away from the rim lip, and will be uniform.

                  Distortion in this would mean 1) incorrectly seated tyre 2)damaged rim 3)sidewall damage to tyre.

                  For incorrectly seated tyre, take it to the tyrewalla and get it fitted to your satisfaction or take it to a proper tyre shop. (with tubeless tyres you should try your best to get the work done from the shops with the tyre wise and other necessary tools.)

                  Check the rim's lip, put the bike on main stand and spin the wheel slowly while looking at the rim's edge tangentially.

                  From my experiences with roadside tyreshops, they dont have the equipment required to remove/fit the 'tubeless tyre' properly, its mostly trial and error fitting.

                    all the points mentioned by fellow members are valid. But i said to change tyre because of 4 cm wide hole. That's huge.
                    And for alignment check, rim check, balancing etc you can go to the shop which deals with tyres & rims. A good & well equipped shop is competent enough for these kinda job.
                    Edit: also your tyres are almost 4 yrs old which means they are nearing their end.

                      2. Yes, the tyre rotation is in right direction
                      3. Thanks a lot for for the advice. I'll stick to the HH Workshop only.
                      4. That woul be really unfair, i don't waana spend 2000 bucks for just a puncture.

                      The tubeless tyres were introduced after 2008 Hunk models. Mine had tube in it as stock. BTW, The tyre is MRF Nylogrip Zapper Y 100/90-18.

                      I'll try the sealing of bead and rim in the morning, as if i go now, neighbours will wake up and may think of me as thief trying to break lock of bike.

                      That cut is really wide and long, I'm just lucky that i'm still ok and browsing talkies as the puncture had happened while i was cornering at ~70 kmph and that too with pillion rider. I'm just surprised, how the tyre didn't gave up despite the harsh treatment at that moment. Anyways, i'm running short of time and will get i checked on monday or 26th of this month.
                      FYI, I have clocked only 15000 km in 4 years and that too politely, i mean keeping engine revs ~4000k and braking like a gentleman. So tyres still have very deep tread.

                        Problem Resolved by installing new tyre

                        Problem found :- Tyre lost its load bearing capacity at the point of cut and hence used to become flat at that point, causing wobbling due to uneven tyre surface. According to external mechs, it has safety issues too. HH Workshop mechs were of no help.

                        Resolution :- New tyre. I got Michelin Sirac Street. Awesum tyre. Gave a completely new dimension to handling.
