    Yamaha FZ 16 related multiple querries

    I got my bike in Dec'09 and have done 39k kms since then. last six months I have been running it with its midship muffler removed and an 8 inch pipe piece welded in its place and I like the sound it makes now. Naturally I have been experiencing a sharp drop in mileage which was until now not much of a trouble. I am planning a 6 days 2000 km round trip so I want fuel to burn a smaller hole in my pocket now.

    Question 1. How can I improve the mileage keeping the same sound ?

    I changed my rear tyre when around 20k and got the same new one fitted. It certainly needs replacement now and I dont want the same again.

    Question 2. Can a 150/70/17 be fitted on the same( stock) wheels. If not
    can a 140/70/17 ( slightly higher aspect ratio, that on a cbr 250 be fitted? If not what options other than the mrf stock tyres I can explore?


    My riding habits are so that I always tend to keep the rear in torque and keep shifting gears upwards while braking and then utilizing almost all the torque of individual gears while accelerating. I have also driven my bike insanely hard. It is not so that I havnt maintained her. " She has slowed down ". I love her I dont want to change her.

    Question 3 : How do I get her speed back?

    Advice is a form of nostalgia.
    Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

      Want roaring sound +mileage? Contact joel and get a ffe from him. And about tyre, don't know why you want 150/60, but you can definately fit 140/70.

        actually Fz16 has a two stage exhaust system and I have removed the midship muffler only. The resulting sound is sweet but little thumpy at low revs and doesn't give an appreciable change at high revs.

        I have known xbhp for years but have joined recently only. I don't know how to contact people. help me

        little calculation needs to done for ffes so as to create the right kind of siphon and the effect on exhaust valves to to minimized.

        Low profile tyres arnt so suitable to our indian conditions and thats why you see many fz16 owners either converting to tubed tyres or grappling with low pressure driving, this is the reason I would like to go for a fatter and taller tyre.

          Your pipe is not right and creating a lot of back pressure. As a result, the sound might be nice but overall performance must have gone down drastically including FE. I suggest get in touch with Joel, Race Concepts who can help you with the right set of upgrades to provide you the sound, the performance and the FE required as well. If you constantly rip her, you cannot expect mileage from an FZ. Plus keeping her too much on the redline will lead to metal fatigue and the pistons seals will go bust resulting engine oil getting consumed very fast. I suggest post your queries in the ownership thread of FZ. It has most likely been answered rather then opening up a seperate thread for the same.

          Or you can request the mod to merge it with the ownership thread.

          Secondly putting higher profile tires will change the Center of gravity of the bike raising the height of the rear and putting more mass weight at the front affecting handling and braking at high speeds which is dangerous.

            what can be said about FAZER then? it adds 6-7 kgs of extra wt in the front with all its fairings and head lights, And I dont think yamaha people have balanced that mass.

            10 mm of tolerance in height can be accomodated and I think that danger is exagerated.

              Well your ride, your life ... If you feel it is exaggerated then go ahead with whichever profile you feel is right for you. The Fz/Fazer suspension is not ride height adjustable.
