  • Honda Unicorn starting woes

    Hi,

I own a 2009 model Honda unicorn with 11,200 kms on Odo. The bike is hardly ridden for more than 300 kms a month. I have been facing starting troubles from last few months. I used to get starting problem right after re fuelling the bike. The bike simply won't start even after multiple kicks after re fuelling. On one occasion i had to push the bike for 3 kms back home and the next day it started fine as if nothing happened.

Yesterday while returning home it stopped again. I tried to start using self start multiple times but didn't work. Tried kick start too but that didn't work as well. I'm sure battery is not the problem since the neutral light is on and all the electrical things work fine. I had to push it back home again yesterday .

Guys can you please suggest what to do regarding this?
I goggled around and saw a few people mentioning Ignition coil to be the cause. I'm not very good when it comes to technicalities of a bike.

I would really appreciate if someone could give me an insight to this problem and how to fix it.

Maybe the following thread can help.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Are you fuelling it to full every time?

To check if it is a coil issue, you can remove the plug wire and try starting the bike keeping the plug wire end near to the engine cover and see if it sparks. But be careful when doing this, don't do this check near to petrol tank or anything that is inflammable.

No, I never re fuel to the brim. Usually i fill for not more than 2 - 3 litres. infact this problem doesn't happen all the time. it's intermittent. have faced this 3 - 4 times in last couple of months.

To be very honest with you i have no idea where the plug wire is. I'm a complete novice when it comes to technical things regarding bikes.

one more update, yesterday bike was not starting at all as i mentioned in my post. Today i tried to start it and it started with the first kick itself

look at the right side of engine, there's a black cable connected to a red or black adapter. That cable is spark plug wire. Pull the adapter, it'll come out, now you are looking at spark plug, open it with a appropriate wrench.
Now connect the spark plug to adapter (which is with the cable).
Hold on to adapter's rubber part only and turn the ignition ON and give it a kick start. Spark plug's lower end should literally spark. I think you should do this test when your bike doesn't start/giving starting problem.
I guess you can refer to owners manual for parts name/location too.
Another thing, if you are incompetent then go to mechanic & ask him to troubleshoot. Take 2nd, 3rd or as many opinions from different mechanics and report back.
EDIT: any other observation, any sound from anywhere? Anything you're suspecting not normal?

            Hi,

            thanks for the reply.
Well, from last 3 - 4 days i'm noticing some weird sound from the engine too. It started after i serviced my bike from a local mechanic..

When i'm trying to accelerate i hear karr karr sound. for example if i'm at a low speed like 40 on 5th gear and try to give the accelerator hard it makes that sound. it doesn't happen if i accelerate in a steady manner. I have heard that sound in bajaj bikes before.

what were the exact job done under service? Was the sound from engine is like there's some marbles inside, hitting the engine components?
