  • New Yamaha FZ16 queries. Newbie

    Hello
This is my first post in xbhp. I have bought a Yamaha FZ16 last month and it just returned after its first service. So far, i am loving the machine. I have few basic(noobish) queries for maintaining the bike.

    1. How often do i need to change the oils(engine/brake)?
    2. Do i need to do it myself between the services?
    3. I bought a Motul chain lube.. Is it okay to use with the FZ16's chain?
    4. For cleaning the bike, i can just hose water all over the bike (including engine n all) safely right? And then lubing the chain would do right?

    1. Check your owner's manual,
    2. No, not necessary,
    3. Yes, most probably,
    4. Yes, everyone does it. Only bad quality bikes ever catch rust, short circuit, etc.
Fz should do just fine, when mostly every Indian bike does...

      Welcome to the forum

      1. The oil change interval is listed in the owners manual.
The first one is perhaps due at 1000KMs. Its a good practise to change the oil in <300KMs as this is when the engine will throw the maximum filings..
      2. The oil changes fall in the free service period untill (i think) 3rd service. After that you would need an extra oil change
      3. Yes it is ok to use (infact its one of the better brands!) Do remember to "CLEAN" and "LUBE" the chain every 600KMs for a good healthy chain sprocket life
      4. You should avoid hi pressure spraying of water...You get nozzles to vary the intensity, you may want to research on that. Else, splash water, use car shampoo, and then splash water again should help. Wax polishing the bike after a wash would retain the looks of the bike for long. Use the Chain clean spray or WD40 to clean the chain of all grime. Then spray water, and then lube the chain!

          hahaha, I find that hilarious.
My bike already has rust even when it was on the showroom.
Sadly the quality of the paint on the chassis is very poorly applied. Numerous places where there is no paint and rust showing through.

            1. How often do i need to change the oils(engine/brake)?
Engine Oil - Yamalube 20w40 for atleast first 2 service interval, then I suggest Yamalube 15w50 semisynthetic. Your first service must be at max 1K/1month, rest will be 3000km/70days, whichever comes first from last service.
BrakeFluid - Depends, usually after a year, some times 2 years.

            2. Do i need to do it myself between the services?
No, you dont need to do it. Oil change at service interval is enough, not required to do additional change in between since semi synt oil can easily last 3000km or 70days. But make sure you check the engine oil level is between low and high mark of the dip stick, once every 15 days and if its low add little oil to bring it to the mid level, this again wont be required in new bike but after a year or so.

            3. I bought a Motul chain lube.. Is it okay to use with the FZ16's chain?
Yes absolutely, you can use any good quality chain lube, I myself do it every week or 250km since mine is ordinary rolon chain. Since your bike has an o-ring chain, once every 500km or when you see there is no oil residue and mostly dirt is stuck after riding in rain, wash the dirt off and let it dry, then apply spray, remember you dont need to spray too much so that it starts dripping, little is enough.
            4. For cleaning the bike, i can just hose water all over the bike (including engine n all) safely right? And then lubing the chain would do right?
Yes, rust sets if you dont dry it properly. After wash, park the bike in shade, not sun. Personally I wash the bike once in 20 days or when it gets too dirty and muddy.

There are no short-cuts to any place worth going. So ride safe when you are treading uncharted roads.
