  • Bike newbie. Gear shifting help.

    Hello everyone

This is my second post on xbhp. Well i am new to bike riding on the whole, so i hope i don't sound very noobish! I bought a FZ16 a month back, and it just returned after its first service. I am having a little trouble regarding the gear shifting. Some questions.

1.I always upshift at 4000-5000 rpm. Is that ok?
    2. At lower speeds, even when i am sometimes on 3rd or 2nd gear , the bike jerks a lot. Its not smooth. I have to downshift to 1st gear. I have read that u don't have to really downshift to 1st unless you are starting the bike. So i don't knw if its an issue with the bike.
    3. Even at 4th gear, at around 45kmph the rpm increases and the engine complains. Is that normal? To shift to 5th around that speed?
    4. Also there is a very distinct "clunk" between gears, is that fine?

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Is the bike post run in??? If not keep the RPM strictly below 4k and accelerate gently. If post run in, then you can shift all the way into the redline if you want, just shift when you feel comfortable but dont make it too low like below 3k etc, which'd cause the bike to lug.

Whenever the bike starts to knock you can downshift, and this is not a SS80, you can use 1st gear whenever you want and feel apt.

Thats called lugging i.e the split second when you accelerate and the engine starts to knock. Dont do that, if the bikes not ready then dont upshift, instead downshift.

      4. Also there is a very distinct "clunk" between gears, is that fine?

Its a new bike and hence the tranny would be abit clunky. Try this, when downshifting, pull in the clutch, blip throttle, downshift, and let go off the clutch.

        1) Upshift when you can hear the engine sound stressed or roaring at a constant tone.... you'll get used to that sound as time goes by and wouldn't need to look at the RPM meter to know when to upshift...

        2) As Ashwin said you can shift to 1st whenever the need arises ...

Not sure about the other 2 questions

The following may sound rudimentary, but this is what you should do:

          1. When you start the bike, depress the clutch completely (or at least 80%) and slot it in 1st gear. Accelerate slowly as you disengage the clutch simultaneously.

          2. Continue accelerating gradually and upshift to match the speed. You won't need to look at the rpm meter to judge when to upshift once you get used to the system.

          3. Every time you shift gears (either upshift or downshift) make sure you use the clutch properly. Never shift without engaging the clutch. That would be catastrophic for the transmission and the engine in the long run.

          4. Anticipate when you want to decelerate, slowly close the throttle and let the speed drop as you apply brakes (preferably both at the same time). Downshift to match the decreasing speed. Remember to use the clutch, always.

          5. When you almost come to a standstill, slot into the 1st gear again and keep the clutch engaged (else the bike will shut down with a jerk).

Always remember to accelerate and decelerate gradually, not suddenly.

I'm sure that you will master the art of shifting gears as time passes by.

Always wear safety gear while riding and respect the other vehicles on the road.

          Cheers!

              All above are good advices

Actually only with time you will be comfortable no shortcuts here

Listen to the noise of the engine if its rougher than usual you must be in wrong gear or maybe ripping

if you moving at a quicker pace and engine makes louder noise up-shift

if moving very slow and engine jerks listen to noise it would be stuttered you need a downshift

Thanks a lot everybody. It makes me feel very happy and welcome here. All the advice. Ok, i have one more query. I am planning a sort of long ride. Around 2 hour drive.. 150 km. So what are the things i should take care of?

                1. Tyre pressure? its 28/33 now.. should i fill extra for a long drive?
                2. Riding tips? It hurts sometimes on long drives.. so any tips for adjustment of suspension and all?(its an FZ16).
                3. Any other long ride tips?
