neevarp16 what here most of guys do is , after getting bike from showroom pay the road tax & other fee at RTO but don't get any number untill the serial / series in which the number you wanted come . Once it come get the number you wanted .

But you need to tell that thing clearly to the agent guy at RTO through which the showroom peoples doing registration , as they have lot more work so they simply get any number to the pending bikes . And once a number is registered to a frame/chasis no & engine no . of perticular bike it won't be changed .

So pay the taxes first & in bold letter write the number you want on the folder carrying your bikes paper at agent & tell him strickly don't add any other number & remind / ask him after every 2/3 days is the series open or not .

One of guy i know is still waiting from 2 months to get the number he wanted after paying all taxes .

Also i think if anyone wants a number from unopend series he will get it by paying triple of what that number costs when series opens .

You can get a temporary registration mark on new vehicle. It costs few hundred Rupees. Temporary mark is valid for only 1 month. For a number of your choice, you can block an advanced number for 90 days (time frame depends on state to state). In Karnataka, if running series, you can get the number of your choice by paying 6000 INR and 25000 INR for advanced series, for 2 wheelers. Fancy numbers like 1111, 1234, 8055 etc needs additional payments. The rates are revised time-to-time. But if you are lucky, you can get the number (except VIP/fancy) without any fees.

If the RTO officials are not revealing the next series, all you can do is register the bike later. Till then you are not permitted to ride the bike legally. Waiting time may vary from few weeks to months, depending on how many vehicles get registered in the RTO.

But, why pay triple after the series gets opened.?
Did you mean before opening?

You mean we can have the bike at home without riding it?
I can wait for that, though that is the hardest part

But, somewhere I heard that one should register the bike within 15 days from buying and/or 50kms of riding!

Yes before opening of serias that is what i meant by unopened serias .

Once the sell letter from showroom peoples reached to RTO office you have to register / pay taxes within ( maybe*) a week , if not then a fine of ( maybe* ) 100 rupees per day starts .

Usually showroom guys won't start speedo untill registration , so i think it won't be a problem .

Easiest, though a little more expensive option - Approach a reliable driving school, they have better hold on RTO

Temporary registration RTO guidelines

Hi,

I am expecting the delivery of my bike (Yamaha FZ-16) in a couple of days. However it was sent to the RTO only a few days back, so getting the registration number will take more than a couple of days. What I want to know is 1. Is it legal and hassle free (I.e.cops not stopping me at every signal) to ride a bike with the temporary registration that the showroom has? 2. If so, for how long is it valid?

This will help me plan take my delivery as I have just two options. Either to pick up my bike in the morning before college or in the evening after work. I personally prefer the first option as I am never sure what time I'll get done with work in the evening. But my showroom's in Borivali and college and office in Bandra, so I'm scared that riding all the way there will create problems due to the TC number. Evening is chilled out in that regard because there aren't cops at every signal on the route I'll be taking.

What is the best way out?

Let me make few things clear. This is my recent experience.

1. Temporary registration cannot be done, if the actual registration is going to be done in the same RTO. (Told by Showroom guys, Driving school & RTO)
Its a different case if the temporary registering RTO and actual RTO are different.
2. You are allowed to choose 1000 numbers starting from which ever the series is running from. 4K if i am not wrong in TN.
3. You are allowed to select any number not dependent on the series, fees are way too costly. More than 25K may be.

My option was to wait a month till the series opens and pay required money in RTO and get a challan for the same. Correct name has to specified when paying the money to get that in the challan.
During registration you need to mention that your number is already booked and produce the challan at that time. Showroom guys can handle this if you give the challan to them.
