Engine overhaul...Boring option
Fellas
I have Pulsar 150dtsi (2007 Make)
I have to get its engine overhauled, so I was contemplating over few things
1. Will increasing the bore give me increase in torque (but dnt know will this increase the rpm range)
2. WIll this help me in pulling the bike at hills (like toward leh)
3. What other suitable options are there?
Seniors please help.
Also let me know the place in delhi who can expertly do this.
Thanks!

increasing bore size means more cc (increase in displacement) so it'll naturally increase the power & torque output, hence resulting in better pickup. But rev range will stay same and same goes for the top speed (unless you alter the gearing)Originally posted by honda monk View Post1. even a 100cc will do with correct tuning :-)Originally posted by honda monk View Post2. WIll this help me in pulling the bike at hills (like toward leh)
change the engine kit dont re-bore. It can cause trouble when not done to a level of perfection.Originally posted by honda monk View Post3. What other suitable options are there?

Sorry got no idea of delhi experts..

Reboring is to take the existing kit out, shave off some metal from the cylinder walls and make it smooth again, in effect increasing its bore slightly. This also increases the cc slightly. Corresponding to the bore increase, the piston and rings have to be replaced with appropriate oversized ones so they work properly in the bigger cylinder. Since this is more cc engine, the torque and subsequently the power increases. This is something what Joel does to our engines.Originally posted by abhiiceman View Postwhats the difference between changing engine kit and reboring?
Changing engine kit is, removing existing bock piston kit from the bike, buying a brand new kit from the Official Spares shop / SVC and install the new one in the bike. Engine is good as new again
(Depending upon skill of installer).
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

i thought reboring meant to replace the block nd piston to a new one..Originally posted by antz.bin View PostReboring is to take the existing kit out, shave off some metal from the cylinder walls and make it smooth again, in effect increasing its bore slightly. btw if engine gets old only the piston rings breaks right due to which oil enters cumbustion region producing white smoke so wont changing the rings be enough?..or
does the size of the bore increase gradually due to friction?..
lol does this also mean we can dig a huge bore into the existing one and turn it into a 250 or 300cc?..
does the other parts have the capacity to handle such big hole..?

If your piston rings break, oil entering in the combustion chamber and white smoke wont be your only worries. Broken rings will mean loss of compression and a significant loss of power. Infact a possibility of the engine not firing even.
Yes the cylinder also wears down gradually. Improper combustion and prolonged operation with worn out piston rings can accelerate the wear down of your bore. Once the bore dia has increased beyond a certain limit or there is significant ovality you will need to carry out reboring of the cylinder. Of course there is a limit to which you can do it. Reboring if done properly increases the cc and also the peak power and torque. But again the increase in the Power means higher peak pressures in the cylinder which has to be borne by the engine components. So suitable modifications may need to be carried out depending on situations. Its not always about speed.

thanks for clearing my doubts, btw had noticed the power loss of unicorn it was like riding a splender or even worst, also another thing i noticed was if a bore in worn out engine will produce some metal sound(hitting a metal with metal rod or something liek it) at high rpmOriginally posted by vibbs View PostIf your piston rings break, oil entering in the combustion chamber and white smoke wont be your only worries. actually my dad had a rebore for this unicorn a few weeks ago but the cylinder block was the same old one so i felt like that mech has cheated by not replacing the cylinder block, but still the mech has charged about 4k something just for new piston and rings and reboring the old block...is this price appropriate for rebore.Last edited by abhiiceman; 07-01-2012, 01:38 PM.

yes 4k seems ok.Originally posted by abhiiceman View Postis this price appropriate for rebore.
That metal hitting sound was may be due to worn out engine bearings and/or damaged crank etc.
But now everything's fine, right.

What was the odo reading of the bike which underwent this heart surgery? Just asking for the record.Originally posted by abhiiceman View Postthanks for clearing my doubts, btw had noticed the power loss of unicorn it was like riding a splender or even worst, also another thing i noticed was if a bore in worn out engine will produce some metal sound(hitting a metal with metal rod or something liek it) at high rpm

Also the price seems on the higher side but could be because it is Honda. Because by comparison, the entire Pulsar 220 block piston kit costs just Rs.2800/-.Advice is a form of nostalgia.

i am not a fan of reboring but one of the quotes that i got was 750 for a rebore + 1200 for piston - usha make + 300 for piston ringsSuffering from Parked Motorcycle Syndrome

Yes now the bike is roaring like new unicorn and theirs no metal hitting sound even at higher rpmOriginally posted by Honda_CBF View Postyes 4k seems ok.

believe it or not it was changed at 1020xxkmOriginally posted by antz.bin View PostWhat was the odo reading of the bike which underwent this heart surgery? Just asking for the record.

220 block for 2.8k
when my friend got his new bore he paid about 4k for bore kit and total bill amount was 7.5k and was done at 20k odo reading, btw runs on k&n
thanks for the info got some idea now regarding thisOriginally posted by ROCKRZ View Posta new block piston kit for the unicorn costs about 3500 kit so 4000 for reboring is somewhat indigestible. but the price changes from mech to mech...
