  • Engine RPM not coming down after acceleration

I own a 8 years old TVS Victor GLX.

There is a problem with my bike. After accelerating the engine RPM just stays up, like holding the accelerator. It never comes down or it becomes normal after sometime. This problem is there only during rainy season or during night (if its cold outside)

First i guessed (my mechanic too) it as a problem with throttle cable and i replaced it but, the problem still persists. My mechanic says he had checked the carb and there is no issue with it. Now he is suggesting me to change the CDI unit (which will cost 1000+, as said by him).

But before changing CDI unit i need suggestion from people here. Should i go for CDI unit change, i dont mind spending 1000+ if i'm getting peace of mind or is there anything i can do to solve this issue.

Please help me to find a solution.

review your cable related all surrondings are fine n good. twist your throttle grip a bit more towards low rpm. turn your handlebar left n right. In your carb, make sure throttle cable returns to default state.

Revs not coming down may indicate a lean mixture, make sure that's not the case.
Also check if the throttle return spring on your carb is ok.

            @ swift,
sticky throttle plate (also called butterfly) and/or slide can also be the cause. Check that too.

You can only have two problems and nothing to do with the CDI or the clutch:

                1. Your fuel mixture is too lean as someone mentioned, get your carb cleaned thoroughly.

                2. Your throttle cable or slide is getting stuck. From the pictures I could google, it looks like the GLX has a cable operated round slide carb & not a diaphragm one.

The slide on my Supra carb used to get stuck a lot in the rains as the water used to trickle down on the throttle cable to the top of the carb and then into the slide causing it to stick.

A good test would be when it happens next time, give sharp taps on the carb body (the top cylindrical part) if the revs decrease immediately, then its the slide or the cable else its your fuel mixture or a leaking inlet rubber.

get a stronger spring to close the slide.
My friend's bike had the same problem. He had to put 2 springs to give enough force to close the slide/throttle. Problem fixed.

                    nice juggad idea!!
Just be sure that slide's able to open fully with full rotation of accelerator.

Here is the video of my bike. I took it when i had the problem.
                      Victor_glx_RPM_Raising_1 - YouTube

As you can see from the video, the rpm raises, it comes down once the VTI light is on(that green light blinking on the console) . And, @0:22 you can see i'm twisting the throttle, after that the RPM is stuck and also the VTI light stays on.

                      Here is one more...

Thank you guys for your suggestions.
I called TVS to ask their guidance and they suggested to give my bike to the TVS service center. I have got hold-off a person from TVS's technical section and he agreed to assist the guys at service center in diagnosing the issue.

Got a slot booked for my bike on 4th July...Fingers crossed...Till then i have to suffer with this issue.

if the problem is with the butterfly valve, try wd 40 for some temporary relief

first of all, remove carb from bike, then on the carb's end (which connects to engine inlet) there's a valve which opens when you operate throttle on the handle bar. This valve is called butterfly valve or throttle valve, it can become sticky because of carbon deposits. Directly spray wd40/petrol/kerosene and brush out the gunk. Done. This should fix the sticky butterfly valve. Now put back the carb and ride.

Guys @ TVM, avoid Anton TVS at any cost

Got my bike repaired from TVS service center (Anton TVS, Trivandrum) today. They replaced some part inside carb. It was mentioned as 'O- ring oil filter' in bill, charged 40 bucks for it and 200rs for labour charges. Rode my bike 15Km (from service center to my office), no issues till now. Hope it wont come again.

I should mention my HORRIBLE experience with Anton TVS, Trivandrum here. They are the WORST service center i have ever visited, full of dump, lazy people who never want to do any work other than changing engine oil and think that they have done some R&D.

                              Long story below....
Gave my bike to Anton TVS on 4 July 2012 and i was told to come back on 6 July to collect my bike. When i gave the bike, i told them clearly "I HAVE REPLACED THROTTLE CABLE JUST FEW MONTHS BACK BUT THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS" They too nodded their head like a "boom boom maadu (Tamil)". One of the mechanic from Anton TVS checked the bike in front of me and confirmed that the problem is not with the accelerator cable.

After two days, on 6 July, I went back only to find my bike lying in some corner, those guys have not even touched my bike. On asking the service advisor about this, (his reply really irritated me) "The problem is with the accelerator cable, it has to be replaced but we don't have it in stock". My expression was like "From where on earth these guys come" (Remember the incident when i left my bike on 4 July). But, even after he said so, i kept quiet (decided to talk only if the problem was not rectified after they changed the throttle cable). He promised to deliver the bike on 9 July. So for now I have to leave Anton TVS, without my bike.

I was not really convinced by his words and i felt that i wont get my bike even on Monday if i don't do something to kick @ their ass. So, came home and dropped a note about my experience with Anton TVS to TVS customer care (Not sure if it really helped me).

Again, on Monday, i called them to check about my bike. Again, the same reply "Accelerator cable not in stock". But this time i don't want to keep quiet, i called and spoke to Anton's works manager.

Me: %^$&+=* ***Explained him the whole story****
Work manager: Did you tell about this to TVS?
Me (In my mind): Either, my note to TVS or the guy @ TVS who recommended Anton TVS should have contacted this guy.
                              Me: yes
Works manager: I will get the bike ready by 10 July and will inform you.

I was expecting his call on 10 July. But, no response from Anton till 10 July EOD. That day i felt like (in a teasing note)"Hahahaha.....Even TVS cant do anything about Anton TVS...Thats it! I have to learn mechanic works"

Next day, on 11 July, i called works manager @ Anton. I was expecting the same stupid reasons to postpone the delivery. But, to my surprise, he said the bike is ready, i was like and .

Went to Anton TVS this after noon, test rode my bike and it was all OK. Works manager said that TVS people had contacted the MD of Anton TVS and this have forced them to do their work, at least this time.

                              At last, happy ending...

I felt like an Anna hazaare who won the Lokpal bill....Phewwwwwwwwwww.......It took them one week, numerous follow up with TVS and intervention from MD of Anton TVS just to do a simple repair. I'm still wondering how these guys will work if there is any major issue with any of the bikes.
