  • Difference between the engine of P150 and Unicorn

I'm sorry if the question I'm about to ask is in the wrong section! anyways i wanted to know what's that difference between the engines of a P150 and Unicorn. In the papers both are 150cc Pulsar producing 15bhp and unicorn just 13.4 and there's a difference in the torque figures but they sound really different. Other day i saw a 2 year old P150 and a Unicorn. the P150 sounded like its almost dead! all the rattling and stuff but the unicorn is as smooth as a new bike. Is there something to do with the quality of the engines as we know honda's way better than bajaj when it comes to quality. Senior members please answer.

Query Closed. It might become a battleground.

Power and smoothness are not really inter-connected. A powerful vehicle may be either smooth or rough or a mix of both at different rpms', depending on a lot of other factors.

Let me tell you how they reach these figures: Unicorn's engine is largely unchanged all these years, except for some viscous air filter upgrade, etc. It is a smooth bike, with plenty of midrange torque so its top end is acceptable, i.e. 13.4 PS.

Generally the industry average for 150cc (excluding R15/ CBR150R) has been around 14 PS. Pulsar 150 was also 14 PS from 2007 onwards. But it got an update few years back, probably a better carb and some tuning, which raises its output to around 15 PS.

And when you talk about quality in Indian context, remember than it depends a lot on the vendors. A bad quality part supplied by a vendor, sometimes ends up jeopardizing the 2 wheeler company's name too.

@^ +1 Apart from what you said, the sample size used by the thread starter is just 1 bike of each kind. I have seen 5-7 year old Pulsar 150 engines running smooth as new even today.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.
