well you mentioned that the silencer is fully altered. you have answered the question yourself. with the altered exhaust how do u expect a stock rx sound note..
the tank rust has nothing to do with the exhaust but cleaning the rust is important.

2- strokers will be able to help you more on this. but if you want the stock sound get the stock exhaust ...

check for leak from the exhaust joints

use OE exhaust silencer (aka flute)

Kumareszh, just do as satish says. Buy the rx100 core from the shop and have mech change it for you. Say after some 300kms or so the exhaust note will settle down as carbon builds in due course of time.

                Hello everybody,

Iam new to this forum and this is my first post. Basically I am from Mysore, where i did not have any problem finding old mechanics. Now i have moved to chennai and i have purchased an old RX 100. I am having the same problem with my RX 100 as the original poster.

My RX 100 is 1986 model and is my daily commuter.
Mileage is very good 37 - 40 kmpl that is off course if i include my weekend trips on good roads.

But the exhaust is giving a loud noise, again the problem is it gives a shrill noise not a soft note.
Kindly suggest some good mechanics in chennai as i have noticed that this forum is having lot of members from chennai.

People search through junkyards to get the old silencer which give the RX the distinct note and you are complaining about it.
If you really want to change the sound try to get a new core(flute). Still if you find it noisy you can get a new silencer and it is really silent.
I am suggesting this as I am using a new one. But I don't like the sound of new silencers, the bike has lost its characteristic grunt.

get the exhaust decarb'd and change the core if found damaged. also there is a piece of 'packing' (dont rmr what its exactly called) at the joint between the bend pipe and the 'silencer' part of the exhaust, replace this with a new one (should cost less than 100rs incl labor).

Here is what I would suggest, check if the flute/muffler(should not be more than 100Rs for a new one of RX 100) inside the exhaust is that of RX100. A lot of people would have it altered or replace that with that Of RX 135 which tends to increase the sound.

Check for leaks at the exhaust joints, regular ripping of bike would cause gaps in these joints and thus cause a different noise. So check and ensure the whole exhaust is tight.

Check the sound while idling(is it shrill or short).

Hopefully these things should be of some help

                        thanks for the suggestions

It is not that iam complaining about the RX 100 sound, but my bike is giving a shrill noise and it is not uniform also. if i travel for say 20 kms then it is some what uniform.
I tried changing the flute, still didn't get any result. what do you mean by new silencer is it RX 100 silencer or ????

Also can anybody suggest a good mechanic anywhere in chennai,

Yeah, what I meant is new RX 100 silencer.
Before buying I suggest you see a competent mechanic.

Hello brother can you be specific which two holes are blocked in the carb??... Even something in the carb is blocked as mentioned by you it will not have any affect in the sound.... Your exhaust assy or the exhasust core/flute might be making the change in sound first change the core/flute and check the sound

The two holes blocked might be the Oil Injection Inlet & Over flow float bowl out...But Kumaresh as Dinesh said, these have nothing to do with the exhaust sound. The one and only factor is the exhaust itself. Try replacing a fresh exhaust or a non-tampered exhaust from a local market, this might solve the issue...:-)
