  • How to identify clutch condition?

    hi,
I have a 93 model hero honda sleek in which i doubt of a clutch problem.
The reason is that clutch lever shows more freeplay when the bike is running and not seen when bike is parked.
The second reason is that when riding with a pillion,it suffers pickup which is not felt severe when riding single. Also it donot attempts to knock even if going too slow in 4th or 3rd gear.

The bike is used sparingly. Also average is only 45-50 kmpl.
What can be the condition of clutch?Does it require complete overhaul and how much will it cost on a roadside garage?
So Iam expecting help from here.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

The clutch lever freeplay increasing as the engine heats up is normal. The clutch plates and various other components expand and contract with the engine temperature. Always adjust the freeplay when the bike is cold.

Considering its a sleek it must have racked quite a few million miles . The lack of power two up can be anything from lack of compression to just plain old age. When did you last change your clutch plates? The friction material on the plates becomes hard after a certain period of time & the clutch springs loose their strength.

I have no clue about the cost of spares.

think its the clutch plates only , i have experienced this in unicorn while climbing a steep road i changed the gear to 2nd at 15kmph then was like bike was in 4th gear or something so again tried shifting to 2nd with speed of 23kmph again the same result so had to climb the whole steep in 1st gear while even an auto was overtaking me then changed the clutch plates after couple of days and bike was roaring as if it was new p.s even i was with pillion

          Thanks for the reply.
The sleek covered a lot of miles definitely,I don't know exactly as the speedo(odo) is not working. The clutch plate isn't changed for last 3 years or more.May be the spring lost strength.

Now I have another problem.I don't know whether it is right to post it in the same thread. The bike is having a missing when the it comes to reserve.Even if choke is used,it shows the problem for about 1 minute. After that,no problem. Is this due to a dirty fuel filter?

Fill the tank up substantially, no need to top it up, just enough so that you have 2-3 litres above reserve. Now while the engine in running try and switch to reserve, if it still splutters & misfires, then you have debri at the bottom of the tank or maybe water.

If it does not misfire when you do this then you have nothing to worry about, When you forget to switch to reserve all bikes will misfire, some more than the other.

I haven't experienced a problem when switching to reserve(with petrol above reserve quantity)like u said.

But when reserve comes automatically, and even if I switch it at the instant, the problem occurs. When riding in city,it is very difficult. Earlier(6-8 months ago),there was no problem.May be a silly problem.I assume it be a clogged fuel filter.
