  • Yamaha Fazer problem

    Hi everyone,
I recently got a yamaha fazer a couple of weeks ago! haven't finished even the first service! but i am experiencing a problem with the fuel gauge! everytime it shows a different levels. initially the bike was below reserve (when i got it delivered). i filled it for 500 bucks and three dots were there! rode some 40 km and only 2 dots were there. sometimes it shows only 1 and the icon blinking and when i check while it is parked it shows three again!! is it a problem with the fuel meter or electricals or what should i do?!

There could be difference in fuel level when you are parking on center/side stands, depending on where the float(which detects the level of petrol in tank) is located in your bike. For most of the Hero Honda bikes its on left side of the tank, hence while parking on side stand it will show more petrol than normal.

IMO, if there is no discrepancy in the reading when you check while riding the bike (i.e bike in upright position) you don't have to worry!

        Your baby is absolutely fine.
While parked on side stand, you'll always get extra bars on the gauge because the sensor is located in the left portion of the tank and while parked it'll get more petrol. Hope u get the drift!

Launch a complaint and check with ASC in the next service, if the fuel pump needs a replacement, it will be done at free of cost.

^^^ Fazer doesn't have a fuel pump. The fuel gauge is only to give you a approximate reading. Depending on the ambient temp, bike level, etc., the readings can be off by as much as +/- 5 to 7%. Anyway, if your bike is in warranty, you have the option of getting the issue sorted out by the service center.

A fuel gauge is a simple variable resistor, similar to your volume knob on a stereo. The end of the float arm travels over a strip of metal. Best would be to replace the sending unit in the tank as you either might have a slight play between the arm and the strip or a faulty unit. No use trying to repair it as it would go bad again and generally they are not serviceable.

The icon blinks when you hit the reserve. Its not a fault.

Fazer doesn't have a fuel pump.

Kannan, blinking of the icon is just fine. It is designed to grab your attention that a refill is needed at the earliest. In my bike, the fuel icon will start blinking even before it hits reserve, say at about 2L in store against the 1.2L reserve capacity. When your bike is held straight, if the fuel bars doesn't hit max after full tank fill or if it doesn't blink after reserve then you have a problem. Otherwise it's totally fine. Just enjoy riding.

                      My Experience

Dude, I recently got my Fazer v2, I have driven it 115 km till now..
When its was new (just 15 km in odo), I filled gas for 400 rs and its showed 4 points. After 115km it stills shows 3 points.
I think you have to check with the Yamaha service.

I never drove the bike above 50km/h, and rpm never above 5 (x1000).

The fuel gauge is just an indicator. For example if you fill in for Rs.500 when it hits reserves. There will be 5 bars. If you ride for say 100 kms it will show 2 or 3 bars. Then comes the fun part. Now the bars starts to dance sometimes not while running when parked either in side or main. sometimes it blinks, 1 bar, 2 bar. then when it nears the reserve say 1/2 lit it blinks with 1 bar. and finally very close to reserve it blinks with no bar and voila its reserve. So the bars are just indicators as such. Maybe you can keep track with the kms say for example my bike gives about 30-35kms/ltr. Hence if I top up to Rs.500/6.92liters it gives me min 207 - 242kms. So when I hit 200kms in the tripmeter i know it is close to reserve. This is my measure of fuel in the beast. You can device your own way of keeping in track the fuel content.

I have the same problem!! it starts blinking much before it hits reserve. usually i fill for 750 bucks of fuel everytime, it ll show 4 bars and after about 100 kms the last bar and the fuel icon start blinking i told the service guy about twice when i left my bike for service. After the service when asked he said he has fixed it but i still have the problem. Now i have stopped bothering about it.

Fuel Sensor in Yamaha FZ-16/Fazer 150 is just ornamental but if you want to make us of the fuel sensor and so that it won't get kaput, you always need to fill the fuel to the brim. According to my calculations, the fuel reading starts blinking when there is just one block and when that block disappears you must understand that you are nearing reserve. There will be around half litre to 3/4 litre when all blocks disappear and only the fuel symbol starts blinking.

Just can say that it is normal. For better reading results, always keep the bike in centre stand while parking.
