  • Disc Break affects on freeplay of front wheel...:-(

    hie guys....
My HH Glamour had front disc break.
It is affectng on freeplay of front wheel.

I just serviced disc break assembly from my reguler mechanic.
Is there any need to replace the disc pistons??
Disc Pads are good in condition as my mechanic said n no need to change pistons.
but i still have following Problems:
1.pick up is get decrease nowdays.
    2.also affected on mileage.
3.top speed only 90km/h on single seat & 80km/h with pilion.

Wheels of bikes with disc brakes never rotate freely. There is always *some* drag. As long as you can still rotate the wheel 1/2 a rotation in 1 firm push by hand, it is alright.

The reduced top speed could be due to some different reason. Do mention your odo reading and age of the bike so that people can help you out better.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

and adding to that, after having a ride, of say around 10 kms (dont use disk brake throught out the ride). touch the brake disk with your clean finger (beware.. it can burn your fingers if its really problematic) now the heat on the disk should be less than the front tyre.

please don't take a risk of touching disc plate directly, first touch caliper assembly. if its cool, then only dare to touch plate. if caliper is hot, drop some water on plate, whole drop wont evaporate but it will give you sound of evaporation as soon as drop touches the plate. if so, do check caliper once more. don't forget to check whether disk is bent a bit. this may cause the problem which you are facing.

        Cheers.

          10.
But I dont think it will be hot enough to burn fingers, because bike can do 90kmph and top speed is 95 something i guess.
          SID BHP where are you??

Once the Disc plate gains a certain momentum, it automatically gets free from the pads due to heat gained prior to the momentum, thats the concept in which Disc brakes are designed worldwide.

If you feel your case is abnormal, then there are only 3 things to check,

            1) Brake pads
            2) If new pads are replaced, then the disc plate age (Concentric circles)
            3) Very rarely the piston may apply over pressure, which can be released with a full oil drain/fill.

Check if pistons are jammed or not retracting properly. If you have never cleaned them, probably the case as well.
If you are little bit mechanical minded and have the tools, procedure should be similar to below....

              Open the caliper bolts.
              Pull them out.
Take out the locking pin or something similar mechanism. (Dont press lever from this point till your done else you will suck air)
              Pull the pads out.
              Clean the pistons.
Have a look at the pads, Glazed? good time to remove it as well with fine grit sandpaper.
              Put the pads in.
              Put the locking pin.
Put the caliper bolts and torque with values specified.
Once done, pull in/out your lever a few times to get the feel back.
              Bed them in.

(Have you bed the new pads though?)

Dont try it if you arent sure ...

Guys I have a similar problem but my disc is bent like 1%, due to which it is creating a little friction to the front wheel. Can I get it repair? Or had to change the whole disc?

So how did you detect the 1% bend?

I do have the same problem with my Yamaha SZ-R. After seeing the above comment I have checked the front wheel of my friend's Unicorn, Pulzar, Discover etc. All are able to rotate smoothly.

My front wheel is not moving as freely as rear one, both wheels has disc brakes. And moreover I had a minor accident long before , now when I told about it to svc guys they said you need to replace it.

If you can then you should buy a new one, but if can be repaired obviously it can't be as the new one.
