  • Holes in Silencer.....

    Pulsar 150 UG3

ever since i have done the last engine rebuild a few months my engine has started sounding a little phat phat kind of .... initially i thought it is the problem of gasket. gasket between exhaust and head. so i replaced it two times. but on close inspection i found that too much air is leaking through the hole near exhaust port in silencer.

now there are a total of 4 or 5 small holes in pulsar silencer at different locations.

the hole near exhaust port has got enlarged due to some reason an ia leaking more air.

initially i tried to close it with a screw. but the scew didn't hold for more than five mins.

now the question is -is it ok to close this hole by gas welding. what is the purpose of this hole? is it ok to close it.? but if it is ok to close it... then why is it provided?

    PICS ON THE SECOND PAGE.

Care to post some pics? Looks like you have a very holy silencer. If I remember right the Pulsar has a double walled header and link pipe connecting to the small chamber under the engine. You might have internal corrosion in the wall but in any case cant say anything without pics .

corrosion, ...its not even one year, since i last replaced my silencer.

yes, Pulsar silencer has some small holes here and there, if you look closely, 3-4 approximately.

220's silencer too had few holes but I never paid any attention to that. One of he reason is, may be, to effectively drain off any water which might enter the silencer. There is a hole right at the bottom of the silencer, if I am not wrong.

yes, one is at bottom, one is near the exhaust end tip, one near exhaust port, and i gues there are 1 or 2 more.

Almost all stock silencer has a hole at the bottom, exactly at the lowest part of it (most probably near the main stand) this is to drain water. (cant say about the others)
                @ Prince,
you said one of the hole has enlarged itself.. You can try to restore its size by welding etc, if your bike becomes normal then good, if it doesnt then also no problem coz that's the way it was.

Do you have any other problems with your bike other than having multiple perforations in your exhaust?? like mileage short/performance?

Any change in phat phat sound when you tried to screw it???

Easiest would be to use a rivet gun. That way you don't block the hole completely and the water or oil can still drain out.

yes, when i inserted a screw. phat phat sound was gone. but screw does not hold for more than 10 mins.

what is a rivet gun ??

                      no other problem to bike.

Prince... I too have UG III. I recently cleaned by exhaust and found only 2 holes in the exhaust pipe. One which is at the exhaust end, one which is at the lowest part of exhaust pipe. One that is exhaust pipe's tail end is for draining water and oozing oil. Same goes with the one that is close to the foot brake pedai. There should not be anything more than this. Are you sure that this part is not corroded part?

Coming to your rivet gun question, its a hand held pneumatic or hydraulic equipment which can be used to push a button shaped nail or "rivet" into metal without the need of hammering. It looks like a gun but fires the nail with force into a metal base.

I think these will not effect your bike too hard. The holes are for draining the water. in bajaj's new models the hole is at the bottom as the silencers are slightly tilted upwards and if any water gets in it automatically gets out by that hole/ holes. Not sure about how many holes exists in other bikes in my case it was one.

even i had a funny incident regarding this i am sharing but dont laugh ... one day i just started my bike and my foot was just under that hole and i felt some air is blowing out from that. I was firstly frightened and was almost set to weld that hole and i took that to a welding shop ( just a welding shop there were no bike mechs... and asked them to fix that . suddenly a person who was also welding his house window told me it is normal. there exists a hole in almost every silencer to drain water.

Here you go, I have one at home which I use regularly, not pneumatic or hydraulic.

The rivets are hollow aluminium and look like this:

The aluminium nail breaks of after you have done riveting. Nice picture showing the process here:

That is one neat tool Gyroerror. I didn't know that Stanley has rivetgun in large stapler design..

just off-topic, where did you manage to get Stanley tools from, I have been trying hard for last 1 year to get my hands on their tool kit and spanner set, did you get it online?
