  • Pre-owned Pulsar 200 DTSi woes

    Hello, fellow Xbhpians,
I'm a '08 P 200 owner and this bike has been with me since March '12. What looked like a bike in excellent condition and a great deal has turned into a nightmare...
Briefly put, the problems are recurring niggles and not major mechanical or engine-related issues

    - The starter mechanism is a royal pain (read below for details)
    - Electricals that made Bajaj infamous when it comes to maintenance and reliability

The troubles started after the purchase itself. It just refused to start and though the starter would whirr and whine.... the battery seemed to be the culprit. This was confirmed after the neighborhood mechanic said that it needed a change, though he first said that the starter relay might have to be replaced citing that the "carbon from the starter has worn off...." (can someone please decipher this?). So in went a new battery, an Amaron Pro Rider beta, dry cell one that is virtually zero maintenance

Post this the starter was more or less fine. Then came the electricals gremlins- the HL, blinkers would go off, idiot lights stuttered and the fuel gauge has been kaput for almost 80% of the time.

Last Sunday, it started fine and was idling as I was cleaning the bike before riding off. But then the engine suddenly trailed off....started it again and there was no response...tried again..tinkered with the battery...tried to hotwire the starter terminals next to the battery- DEAD as a mouse!

To fix all of these, I serviced at the same garage that the previous owner had been taking it to, for a while.

The total I've spent till date is-

    Initial servicing- 850
    Battery- 1600
    Full Service - 1100
Service 2- 500 (might be more as bill hasn't been confirmed yet :/)

Oh and I've ridden it barely 400 kms in 4 months that it's been with me (as I've been waiting for my new helmet).
An RE would be cheaper to maintain perhaps!

The mechanic says that it's a liability to maintain and has warned me that problems will keep coming. I'm told that if it's unused for a few days, the starter gives way and the battery quickly discharges as the Ignition is Digital.

Frankly I don't buy that last bit as there are other bikes (RE Standard, Apache 160 RTR) in my building that have very similar usage patterns (ridden only 2-3 times a week) and I've never seen them give so much trouble

I love its performance but these gremlins are inducing second thoughts...should I continue to shell out money and keep mending it? Is there a permanent solution to the above issues? Have I got a used LEMON? and....Should I get rid of it??

Ironically, my helmet has arrived and the RC transfer was just completed 2 weeks ago

Help/ suggestions/ answers would be greatly appreciated. Danke!

PS The mechanic suggests that replacing the entire wiring, Starter relay and Electronic Sensor is the only long-term solution....a job that might cost me around 5k.

        @ Thread Starter,

Don't get depressed, let me give an example for your scenario, Recently I was about to buy a well maintained contessa car 1996 model, but the owner was so generous to give the car to me for a week to get used to it before purchase and what all happened to you, happened to me in that one week and the similar maintenance issues, cost/availability of parts were quoted by mechanics too, lucky me - still I did not pay a penny and returned it to the owner.

This doesn't mean either your P200 or the Contessa were lemons, its just the way how the previous owner maintained it and the also the built quality. Without any doubt both the machines were considered to be the best at the time they were launched.

In, 2008 even I was addicted to the looks of P200 than the P220FI and booked one, next day I heard a complete review from a P200 owner at office, about the maintenance and uncertain mileage. So, just cancelled the booking and went towards an Yamaha showroom. According to my knowledge P200 has no big difference in-terms of built quality to the P150 or 180 UG version sold parallel.

Any machine at its young age will be as swift as possible without any problems. Now that the bike is out of production line and Pulsars are moving towards different technology, I would suggest you to drop the P200 and buy yourself a new age machine, which will be trouble free for the next few years.

NOTE: My suggestion to you applies only when you plan to use your P200 as a daily bike, same as me coz I planned to use the Contessa for daily use . If you need it for your weekend rides then the P200 will be ideal.

Excuse me if I have not respoded to the thread technically, coz the issues that you have quoted need troubleshooting in multiple directions . So its always ideal to leave the bike for a complete checkup at the ASC and make sure that you pay extra $$$ to the mechanic at the ASC to get the work done precisely.

You need to go to an authorised bajaj service centre and ask them to do a complete electrical test. That includes BCU testing, wiring testing, battery testing, RR testing and switch testing. That will enable you to find the problem and rectify it. From what I understand, your bike has a faulty charging system.

          And:
"The mechanic says that it's a liability to maintain and has warned me that problems will keep coming. I'm told that if it's unused for a few days, the starter gives way and the battery quickly discharges as the Ignition is Digital".

I haven't heard a shittier reason from a mechanic about a bike ever. What he said is complete bullshit. Pulsars are capable of spinning the starter gloriously even after sitting idle for weeks. I can say this for sure as I have owned one for 4 years. My friend's P200 goes out for a spin once a month. But his starter works fine eveytime and mind you his is a very poorly maintained P200.

Once you find this problem, you'll be good to go. Your bike is probably not a lemon. Just have some faith and do what I suggested.

Bro, your mechanic is a lemon. Get rid of him first. Get the entire circuit checked at the SVC. As Pavan bro said, it may be the battery charging mechanism. P200s are quite fantastic machines.

              Thanks for the responses guys!

@HarishK- Wow! That was good fortune making its presence felt there...
Believe me, I've done a LOT of research before I decided to go for a used P200 rather than a used Karizma, once I had decided to go for a used bike.

Also, the 4th para is what the mechanic told me too, so I guess there's some truth in that after all....
I definitely plan to use the bike a lot more as I don't own any other vehicle and the mileage I've done is embarrassing. But it won't be my daily commute ride.

OT- I've had many happy memories of the Contessa...a car with lot of character and soul. One was the ubiquitous Wedding Car of the 80s and 90s Wish you all the best in your quest

@pavanchirmade- That was there at the back of my mind. Had refrained from visiting a Bajaj ASC as I've heard very poor reviews but I guess that's my best shot at a proper systematic solution.
I'm definitely gonna try this as I don't have much to lost I guess (except more money LOL ). I owe the bike a proper solution as I still love it- especially the straight line performance, the exhaust note and those proportionate handsome looks

@Divya Sharan- Thanks mate. I always wanted to buy a new 200 but then Bajaj thought it was funny to pull the plug on it and pour water on my plans...

A short background into why I chose to go for this-
              • Learnt riding on a Ist gen Pulsar 150 with the all-down gearbox and continued to borrow and ride bikes but had never 'owned' a bike or got the hang of the 1-down-5-up pattern
              • I had zeroed in on the CBR 250 as soon as it was announced but was sorely disappointed after seeing it and reading about poor quality etc
              • Was suggested a Bullet by everyone but I'm not an RE rider. Not yet...Sorry
              • The only 1 bike (upto 500cc) that I currently like is quite some way outta my budget

Will keep y'all posted on my further experience. Cheers!

Im having the exact same problem, the starter motor whirrs and then nothing the battery seems good changed it a year back. Plus have changed the relay & fuses.

but this problem is persistent. Ive bought the bike in 2007, its got iridium spark plugs and I use only Motul 5100.

Cant seem to understand the problem.

Started motor whirrs/whine problem could be due to the faulty one-way clutch, may be you can ask your mechanic for this one..

Please replace one way clutch. It costs 650 buck. replacement charges might be near 200. Also go to a authorized service center and Tell specifically what you want changed else they will do a overhauling and take money without replacing the clutch. Also pulsars electricals are awesome .. so unless a mouse has bitten some wires rest assured there Is no electrical problem. Also do not trust what mechanic says ..

Ive made little mistake in describing the problem. My bike use to whirr till i had my one way clutch replaced. Now there is a buzzing sound that comes from near the battery
