I'm a '08 P 200 owner and this bike has been with me since March '12. What looked like a bike in excellent condition and a great deal has turned into a nightmare...
Briefly put, the problems are recurring niggles and not major mechanical or engine-related issues
- The starter mechanism is a royal pain (read below for details)
- Electricals that made Bajaj infamous when it comes to maintenance and reliability
The troubles started after the purchase itself. It just refused to start and though the starter would whirr and whine.... the battery seemed to be the culprit. This was confirmed after the neighborhood mechanic said that it needed a change, though he first said that the starter relay might have to be replaced citing that the "carbon from the starter has worn off...." (can someone please decipher this?). So in went a new battery, an Amaron Pro Rider beta, dry cell one that is virtually zero maintenance
Post this the starter was more or less fine. Then came the electricals gremlins- the HL, blinkers would go off, idiot lights stuttered and the fuel gauge has been kaput for almost 80% of the time.
Last Sunday, it started fine and was idling as I was cleaning the bike before riding off. But then the engine suddenly trailed off....started it again and there was no response...tried again..tinkered with the battery...tried to hotwire the starter terminals next to the battery- DEAD as a mouse!
To fix all of these, I serviced at the same garage that the previous owner had been taking it to, for a while.
The total I've spent till date is-
Initial servicing- 850
Battery- 1600
Full Service - 1100
Service 2- 500 (might be more as bill hasn't been confirmed yet :/)
Oh and I've ridden it barely 400 kms in 4 months that it's been with me (as I've been waiting for my new helmet).
An RE would be cheaper to maintain perhaps!
The mechanic says that it's a liability to maintain and has warned me that problems will keep coming. I'm told that if it's unused for a few days, the starter gives way and the battery quickly discharges as the Ignition is Digital.
Frankly I don't buy that last bit as there are other bikes (RE Standard, Apache 160 RTR) in my building that have very similar usage patterns (ridden only 2-3 times a week) and I've never seen them give so much trouble
I love its performance but these gremlins are inducing second thoughts...should I continue to shell out money and keep mending it? Is there a permanent solution to the above issues? Have I got a used LEMON? and....Should I get rid of it??
Ironically, my helmet has arrived and the RC transfer was just completed 2 weeks ago
Help/ suggestions/ answers would be greatly appreciated. Danke!
PS The mechanic suggests that replacing the entire wiring, Starter relay and Electronic Sensor is the only long-term solution....a job that might cost me around 5k.

. If you need it for your weekend rides then the P200 will be ideal.
Wish you all the best in your quest
). I owe the bike a proper solution as I still love it- especially the straight line performance, the exhaust note and those proportionate handsome looks
