  • Suggestions needed in getting a Used P200

    Hello Guys...

    I own Pulsar 2005 model.!

I like P200 DTS-I personally since its launch..!!! But unfortunately its out of production now..!!!

I came across a Pulsar 200 DTS-I 2009 model for purchase..!!! Luckily the bike ran only 14K kms and is in good condition (Almost showroom condition according to seller)

He said that he is not using his bike and he is in another town for job and said he want to buy RE, so he decided to sell his bike.

    Please answer My Queries:

    Mileage in city and Highway....
(Im expecting 36-40 in city and above 40KMPL in highways with sane driving. I am a sane driver most of the times. Owner claimed a mileage of 40kmpl. He asid that he is a sane driver too)

Any specific issues for the P200..???

Do the P200 2009 model have BCU...??? Is it AC/DC or Full DC...???

I am regular watcher of Pulsar series and i have found that from 2006 to 2008, majority of the Pulsars are having fused tail LEDS, Speedo and faulty handle bar switch sets. I think on addition of BCU to Pulsars, these issues have been reduced..!!! Its my guess. what do you say bro's...???

Is there any special maintenance for Oil cooling radiator or oil cooling system..??

The owner is quoting 50K RS... Please suggest me a good price for me to bargain...

Im not interested in P180 new models...!!! Also i dont require beasty performance of P220, so its not in my list.
Guys i need all your help in choosing that bike. Awaiting all your valuable help...!!!
    Thanx in advance

      • i dont think it can give you a mileage of 40+.
      • whether or not it is full DC can only be verified by existing owners or physical checking of bike. open the side panle and remove the seat, check the RR unit, if it has four wires, it is full DC, otherwise not. other method can be start the bike and switch on the headlight, see if headlight intensity changes when at 1200 rpm to 4000 rpm.
      • 2006 to 2008 pulsars also had BCU.
      • "fused tail LEDS, Speedo and faulty handle bar switch sets" that you saw on other pulsars were becuase of poor maintenaince. these parts are prone to failure as much as it is in other bikes and have a lifespan not less than that on any other indian bike.
      • out of all these things mentioned above, the first i had to change was LED tail lamp and that too after good 50000 kms, and that i think is good enough.
      • the fact is that pulsars are abused much more than other bikes because most bike enthusiasts used to buy only pulsar, so even that factor can not be ignored.
      • 50,000 rupees is too high i guess for a bike model that is discontinued. offer him 40,000, and don't go above 45,000.
      • check with second hand dealers in your city to find out its current market value.
      • check for any accident history.
      • take your trusted mechanic with you to check it thouroughly.
      • check tyre condition, deduct money if worn out.
      • check battery condition.
      • check for any oil leaks (on/near engine/gearbox/output shaft)
      • check service history.
      • check handle alignment.
      • check tyre wear pattern to find any abnormality.
      • check if headlight is still clear transperent, or got yellowish. yellowish means duplicate one, can also indicate that it was replaced in an accident. can also indicate, how the owner used to maintain his bike. (always original parts used or always duplicate and cheap stuff)
      • check engine oil level.
      • check last serviced reciept.
      • visually inspect exhaust condition.
      • start the bike to see if any smoke is coming or any abnormal noises.
      • check AFR screw of carbeurator is at how many turns.
      this shoud be good enough.

Agrees to princesirohi reg the price(and ofcourse regarding most of the other points )
The price quoted is high for P200 which is a phased out model, you can get a 2009 Karizma in good condition for that price (just for comparison).
Around 40k should be ok I think.

highly appreciate princesirohi's effort. Great job.

But would request you not to stick strictly to the exhaustive list. What is easy and replaceable by you should be ignored and emphasis should be on points that matter the most.
14k run bike.. Humm.. I think its a good deal if you squeeze the price to around 40k.
If the tyres are worn out.. Dont buy it at all. 14k on odo shoukd be 14k on road.. Its 2009 model. All probability that the odo was replaced, tampered.

Yes, your guess will be right..!!
Speedo can be tampered and can be changed...!!!

But according to the owner, he is just saying that "Please come and check the bike, inspect the tyres, and bike, have a test ride for its pickup and other things.!! He even said that bring some mechanic with me and let him inspect the bike in all the ways..!!"
He wanted to say that his bike is in top condition without any changes/scratches to his bike. He is always mentioning that his bike is in showroom condition. This is what making me to think about that bike.

Also the bike is not ridden in city. It was bought in a town in my state and hardly the roads will not give any chance for ripping or abuse the bike.

I have forgotten to add some questions, guys please dont mind and try to clarify me..!! Your inputs will be very helpful for me..!! Thanx in advance...!!!

Digimeter reading: Analogue models digi reading can be altered in minutes. Can the digi reading(KMs ran) be changed..??? According to some bike mechanics inputs it cant be changed.

Suspension: Is the suspension of P200(or the same P180 and P220) better than the P150???? (My model P150 is the version for which the Nitrox was started and continued as standard all these years for pulsar)

Seat cushion: My P150 has a really hard seat and i feel that P180 (P200 same i think) and p220 seat have more cushion and comfort than my bike..!! Am i right..??? Please explain.
(I had ridden P180 versions upto 2008. I didnt get a chance to drive P180/P200/P220 2009 model or above ones.)

Sareeguard: If at all i get that bike, I would like to install the P150 chrome(same saree guard of my version) sareeguard (Back womens footrest) to it. Would it be a direct fit..???
Chrome saree guard offer a decent durability. My bikes sareeguard(chrome) is still as it is when my bike was bought. 60% of the time, i will be assisted with pillion! No paint/scratch has happened on it till date. But it will not be the same on black matte finish guards.
Excuse me if it is a silly question. but i want to know

Weight: I had somewhere read that P200 weighs around 145kg which is just 2kg more than my bike. Guys how you people feel when you ride back to back these bikes(Either P200 or P180 latest models)..???
I think the weight of P200(or P180 latest)will not show that much difference to P150. Whats your opinions guys..??
(I think that due to less wider tyres in my P150 the handling will be easy in tight traffics than above specified machines)

Kicker: Is there any way to add a kicker to P200..?? Please answer this. Although the self start is good in P200, i want to know if there is anyway to add kickstarter.

Chain cover: Please dont laugh at me for this question.
Is there any way to add chain cover of P150 or any others to P200/P180 ???
According to me Chain cover reduces 60% or more of chains sound and protects more than 90% from dust and water/moist.
If it all you have any inputs for adding it, i will definitely consider it.
I even watched RTR180 and some bikes which have open chain as standard got covered with chain covers.

Guys i need all your help Thanx in advance

                      ----=+=----
anything and everything is possible in this world, but it is very difficult to change the reading of digital odometer.

no, suspension is not same, front forks are wider and stronger than that of P150, not sure about rear though.

                      seat cushion-no idea.

saree guard: what you said is true, but still, it will spoil the all black-"fear the black" theme.

weight will not be an issue, since you will have additional power on the tap.

handling vise also it will be better than P150, due to stiffer chasis, stronger swing-arm, stronger front forks and wider tyres plus a more sporty riding stance, makes it better handling than P150, and with so much additional power on the tap, you can zip zap zoom through traffic.

turning radius may be slightly more than P150, due to longer wheelbase, but it will not be an issue.

overall due to slightly bigger dimensions of bike, and wider tyres plus more sporty riding stance, you will FEEL that you are riding a slightly big bike.

kick-starter: no idea bro, i never thought in that direction, but without much modification, it will be difficult.

chain-guard: again, you may be able to do it with some local jugaad, but its not needed, open chains are o-ring chains.

                        hii brother
i own a pulsar 200dtsi 2007 model and i am very happy with it
this bike is AC+DC same as pulsar ug3 model
speedometer backlight is DC and illuminated switch also DC
headlight, pilot lamp are on AC rear tail light flickers on low rpm....
the things annoy me is just that when by bike is on but before starting engine if i swtich on pilot lamp just switch illumination i can see nor speedo backlight glows...speedo backlight glows only when engine is on hehe but its not a big deal but i would have liked more if i could glow it without starting the engine....in ug4 u dont face this issue
also if your engine is on and headlights are on and some how your bike turn off by wrong use of clutch or by using high gear rather than using low gear i hope u got me hehe in this case if bike turns off by riders mistake and when you start the engine the backlight of speedo doesnt glows hehe quite strange...in order to turn it on you have to turn off ignition by keys and then start engine and then switch on the lights then back light of speedo glows hehe...i think it is because of BCU of UG3

i dont thing these are much demerits but i dont like this thing in this bike hehe

                        now about ride
on highway i have covered 300kms non stop on average speed of 100to110kmph.... not much vibrations and all
it cruises well on highways..and also posture doesnt gave me back ache
and gave me average of 40kmpl on highway we were on hilly areas too so it gave 40kmpl but i think it could give me more if i would have driven on flat surfaces...
it gives me mileage of 40kmpl in city ride as i am a decent ride fast but only on top gears doesnt put much stress on bike on low gears

recently it gave me about 44kmpl in city hehe as i rode it really very well but in all aspect i get average of 40kmpl.... in my hands

                        handling and all are good
he is demanding high by the way...
i got my bike in 26000rs 2007model it was 11000km on odo its engine is in best condition.... just few body work it needed
rest any thing in which i can help you please let me know

Learned a lot from your observations. They will help me a lot..!!!

And yes i have heard about o-ring chains, but some mechanics are saying that they will last lesser than normal chains,, I had said nothing to them because i dont know much about them in practical ..!!! (i know that lube will be resents in o-rings which will make the chain more robust during heavy duty) Any idea about them...??

Do the ZMA, CBR, R15 also have o-ring chains...???

Some critics say that aahh.. these o-rings make a lot of sound...!! I really get laugh because even the twister, stunner and zma bikes make a lot of chain sound when not properly lubed..!! whats your opinion bro..??

also if your engine is on and headlights are on and some how your bike turn off by wrong use of clutch or by using high gear rather than using low gear i hope u got me hehe in this case if bike turns off by riders mistake and when you start the engine the backlight of speedo doesnt glows hehe quite strange...in order to turn it on you have to turn off ignition by keys and then start engine and then switch on the lights then back light of speedo glows hehe...i think it is because of BCU of UG3

i dont thing these are much demerits but i dont like this thing in this bike hehe

                            now about ride
on highway i have covered 300kms non stop on average speed of 100to110kmph.... not much vibrations and all
it cruises well on highways..and also posture doesnt gave me back ache
and gave me average of 40kmpl on highway we were on hilly areas too so it gave 40kmpl but i think it could give me more if i would have driven on flat surfaces...
it gives me mileage of 40kmpl in city ride as i am a decent ride fast but only on top gears doesnt put much stress on bike on low gears

recently it gave me about 44kmpl in city hehe as i rode it really very well but in all aspect i get average of 40kmpl.... in my hands

                            handling and all are good
he is demanding high by the way...
