RE Thunderbird Backrest Replacement

I want to take off the backrest from my TBTS, but the empty space just below the seat is going to look horrible.
One of my friends dealt with his by having the part that protrudes out chopped off but, needless to say, it looks pretty ghastly.

So is there something that can replace it? I'm looking for a piece of chrome which goes with the rest of the bike.
Also, can I use it to attach side carriers?

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.
