  • Usable reserve and unusable reserve

i came across this picture from the ownership thread of the new discover and i am quite confused

    total :10.5
    usable reserve: 3.5
    unusable reserve:1.6

does that mean the reserve is 5.1 litres???

half the full tank capacity is reserve???Click image for larger version

or is it 3.5 litres is reserve and out of which 1.6 is unusable...???

    Thread Approved

I was quite sure that the reserve was 3.5 liters, but looking at the picture has me confused. That really should be a misprint or else the D125ST will have the biggest reserve capacity for all bikes currently sold in India.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

it seems a misprint. i think it will be 3.5 litres is reserve and out of which 1.6 is unusable. confirm it by mailing to bajaj auto.

Its actually 3.5 lts of total reserve capacity.
1.9 lts usable + 1.6 lts unusable = 3.5 lts of total reserve capacity.

actually the fuel knob has 2 pipes inside the tank
            1. longer pipe -> above reserve level, supplies fuel when knob is in ON position
            2. shorter pipe -> below reserve level, supplies fuel when knob is in RES position

Pipe 2 is not located exactly at the bottom of the tank, actually its a bit above the bottom of the tank. So the pipe isn't able to deliver the fuel between the opening of the pipe and the bottom of the tank. This oil is the unusable reserve. :P

No bro This discover 125 ST is completely different . It has 5.1 litres of reserve . I verified with the bajaj guys and they say the same . It has the biggest reserve in the segment.

              Usuable reserve = 3.5 litres
              unusable reserve = 1.6 litres
              Total = 5.1 litres.

u asked at the service centre? customer care or the dealer?

it is really strange for any bike to have half the full tank capacity as reserve...i dont know of any bike having such a tank and it doesnt make sense to have half tank as reserve...reserve indicates u are about to go out of gas fill ur tank...so why wud bajaj keep half way mark as reserve??

only sureshot way of confirming is D125st owners when u hit reserve(not when u complete 5 litres of petrol but when u actually feel bike going out of gas and u have to turn the petrol knob to reserve..that time get a full tank petrol and see how much petrol goes in after hitting reserve...

The reserve pipe kept bit above the bottom of the tank helps in dust particles not entering the carb as they will get accumulated at the bottom.
Though 1.5L + of unusable reserve is bit more IMO.

Its cleared man, its not printing mistake.
Actually u've 5.1 reserve capacity where 1.6 L of fuel will not be used while driving i.e, not capable of being used.

So, whenever u get reserved, think as u've only 3.5 Liters of fuel left in your tank.
