  • Decarbonising Cylinder head

I want to know when it is needed to do these following work??
    1.cylinder head decarbonising
    2.valve lapping
    3.replace valve oil seal

My odo reading is now 23,000 kms+
and its a 1 year 1 month old engine..
I don't think Bajaj ASC never done this in their normal servicing routine ..

I change engine oil in 1200 to 1600 kms with oil filter as I ride very long distances on my bike.
I always use mineral oil like MAK 4T, RACER4 ...

You might want to tell us what it is .
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

^^^ regardless of what 'its' is... Valve lapping and replacement of valve oil seal at 23,000 kms is way too early. What have you been doing to bring about a situation where you need to all this.

If your bike faces loss of compression and everything else is fine with your engine, then carbon deposits at valve seats may be a reason for it.
My Splendor's engine was de-carbonized at around 30k kms and it was facing low compression and sometimes bike refused to start.

Has to be a splendor - See his name! But why will he take it to Bajaj SVC!?
My splendor was never decarbonised in 10 years and avg. 30 km/day.. actually what is it?
I have started using this on my fazer every other tank full.. keeps the engine, valves and fuel lines clean.

He's talking about a Bajaj Platina.
Well, is decarbonizing mandatory? Or, it has to be done only when we experience some probs within the engine?

As long as you are performing regular maintenance (i guess you are ) and using good engine oils / fuel a platina can go atleast for 40k - 50k kms before needing a decarb etc..
And also since you mention you go on longer rides.. i guess you would be having lesser deposits compared to a platina run purely in 'city traffic'.
So, unless you are facing issues like knocking, loss of compression, pickup, poor mileage, smoke in exhaust etc.. you shudnt be worried. Ensure the regular maintenance like air filter, plugs are replaced every 10k km and cleaned at regular intervals.

decarbonising is normally being done between 10000-15000 kms.
If access carbon built up in combustion chamber then compression will increase, but combustion area decreases. Hence, knocking!
Bike will not pull on instant acceleration, and often stalls when going upward direction.
If u experience this problem, then its need to be decarbonize.
In fact its nothing but a opening a head and removing/cleaning the carbon from the head and valves. Needs new head packing and new head oil seals if found damage.

Valve lapping is done if there is leak of fuel from it. If valve does not seals perfectly. Compression, mileage, top speed will decrease.
It can be checked by putting some water or kerosene facing the valves to the upward direction when open.
If there is a leak, then valve lapping compound is used (available by waxpol Rs.60-70@100gm) to lap the valves via suction cup. Rotating the valve in its seat in any one direction, putting some kerosene for lubrication.

                replace valve oil seal
Its better to replace those when open. Because if it is damage, then engine oil will travel to the combustion camber and bike will smoke.
To change these valve springs needs to be remove to gain access to the valve oil seals. Valve oil seals cannot be inspect/checked without removing valve springs. And if valve is remove then its better to lap also it takes 5 mins for old valves, better to do it for not to suffer in the future.

If you are a DIY then its ok. If not, Bajaj SVC is only going to decarbozine it and not going to check for valve leaks and its oil seal.
Valve lapping is not done by SVC's so done by lathe guys some take Rs.50 or so. And oil seals are also changed during that time because once the valve spring is removed by hammering it needs valve spring compressor tool to fit those, and SVC's guys dont own it only lathe guys own.

                  Thank you all for reply..
I think I take good care of my bike...
Still now the bike touches 70kmph without much moments and top speed is 105-108kmph as shown in speedometer , cruise 70-85kmpl effortlessly with pillion and 15-20 kg of luggage ..
No power loss, it does 600kms constant run without any problem (with stops after each 70-90kms), change and clean air filter, oil filter .
                  Change engine oil 1200-1600kms ..
No problem till now just want to be prepare for any bad situation as I abuse my platina125..
Because these bikes are not made for what I normally do ..

Buddy, you are doing the best possible things for your platina.. Don't worry. Don't try to fix anything if it ain't broke.

dont call me boss doesnt feel like brothers..
BTW, highway riding causes very less carbon deposits. you can easily go beyond 50k mark
