Thread ApprovedAdvice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Though I'm not a bulleteer, I'll give my $ 0.02.
Do you mostly ride at night?
What RPM do you ride in?
Do you change gears asap?
Do you use the self start in the morning as well (first crank)?
If, there are 2-3 yes for answers, then:-
Ride at higher RPM, i.e; rev-match gears!
Use kick start in the morning. Rest of the day - self start shall do fine.

My answers to your questions:
Well I have no such criteria as to when to ride. I ride as and when the need arises.
Mostly I ride in the 50-60 kmph range
I am not a frequent changer of gears
No, strictly no. The first start is necessarily a kick start
I did go to the battery guy again. Somehow I managed to re-create the problem in front of him. He said that he would now charge the battery for 2 days and give it to me. I would be getting the battery tomorrow. Just hoping this renewed recharging works..!

- if the battery voltage is 12 V when the bike is "off", it means fully discharged battery, a fully charged battery should show around 13 V, anything less than 12.5 V and you are entering danger zone.
- since the battery voltage rises to 14V after starting the bike, your charging ckt. seems to be ok. otherwise also, since you mentioned that sometimes self start doesn't work, it means once the bike is kick started, the battery is charged again.
- this means there is a fault somehwere in your wiring, which is creating a temporary drain, like a loose connection which sometimes touches with metal body part causing battery discharge.
- btw, have you installed anything extra on your bike, like extra horns, lights...anything, any electrical item..??
- there might be a problem in any one of the particular electrical item like headlight / indicator/ horn etc....so that when that is used battery is drained immediately, then recharged again and works fine till the time that item is again used. try to relocate any such faulty item.
