  • Pulsar 150 20K Kms

    Dear Fellow Bikers,

My bike is fast approaching its 20K Kms mark and I feel very proud that it has gracefully aged with excellent performance that I'm willing to appreciate with a surprise treat.

Wanted to know if 20K calls for complete engine overhaul. Though I don't see any significant fault with engine or the bike, clutch plates are surely worn out and pick up has become less enjoyable. I recently changed the battery, so electrics are OK for the moment.

I regularly see fellows saying "If it ain't broken, don't bother". I'm little skeptical about Bajaj service centre paying close attention to bike's coming in for 20K Kms fix and the list in the manual is really exhaustive and my skeptical thoughts overwhelms. Castrol bikezone close to my home closed shop for good recently so, I have to do a cross-city drive which I feel is not worthwhile. My driving habits are very gentle and never abusive.. Averaging about 30 Kms daily and never had any major modifications or customs.

Just wanted to know something (and for the benefit of all fellow bikers).

    1. Does 20K Kms calls for complete engine overhaul?
    2. Do Bajaj service centre's offer any special services for 20K?
    3. What are the best alternate options to get back the lost zing? Does Bajaj service centre offer any professional engine decarbonization?

    Regards,
    Prith

20k km is nothing for a bike.
All you need are the following:
    1. New spark plugs
    2. New Air filter
    3. Change Engine Head gasket
    4. Check rear tyre wear. Replace if required.
    5. Check clutch condition.

Engine O/H is not needed at all.
Switch to a Semi Synthetic or Fully Synthetic oil and feel the difference in performance and smoothness.. I would recommend Motul 5100 15w40 SS OR Motul 7100 20w40 (Assuming that the recommended engine oil grade for Pulsar 150 is 20w40)

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Congrats for the 20k feat bro! Anant has answered most of the queries already.
The engine must be fine. You don't need an overhaul till 50k.

Just ensure that you keep changing the engine oil at optimal intervals, like every 2.5-3k kms or so. (speaking about SS oils, minerals have lesser mileage)
Change spark plugs @ every 10-12k kms, air filter at the same time.

Do get your sprocket set checked, I guess they should last till 22-25k at least. Check your clutch plates checked, but I doubt them gone bad since you say you're a sedate rider. Get better tires if worn.
      Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

        Thanks Anant/Divya,

Wondering about spark plugs, will the Iridium plugs be good enough with normal wires or should it go along with spitfire cables?

Regarding the lack of punch in pick up, will it be fine if I go for new set of piston rings or decarbonization will do it?

        Thanks,

          Add to that the following,
          1. Cleaning the carb
          2. Check the brakes (assuming you're on stock pads)
          3. Change brake fluid (assuming it hasn't been changed recently)
Its the fusion of a two wheeled machine & a human being which creates a true biker.

Thanks Abhi. Just wondering, if I can clean the carb(metal parts only) with good douse of brake cleaning spray? Any idea about Iridium plugs and Spitfire cables, wanted to know if spitfire cables are indeed needed.

replacing clutch plates will give you the punch back.....no need to change the rings if there isn't any prob....usually decarbonization in pulsars is needed after 30-35k kms....my personal advice just dont touch the engine if your bike hasn't any major problem....enjoy your ride....

Thanks art. Now, even for decarbonization, is it done through normal fuel additives or the professional injection method through pressurized cannister? I have not seen a single Bajaj svc with this facility. Are there any alternative available for same?

Decarbinization is nothing but scrubbing away the accumulated carbon deposits from Piston top, cylinder hear, valves etc. Engine needs to be opened for this. Any mechanic who has bit experience on motorcycles can do this for you.

Thanks SatSon. One thing in Pulsar's is that we don't have oil restrainer or filters. Its replaced with centrifugal filter. Since my bike's engine case has not yet been open till date, I guess this should be replaced also. Whats your take on this?

                        Re: Pulsar 150 20K Kms

There is a beautiful diy thread on pulsar centrifugal oil filter cleaning please look into it on xbhp diy threads section.
This is going to be a long post but it will be worth it...

                        Now do the following things...

                        1) open the carb completely and clean it throughly. (Clean bowl, carb slide, jets etc tune the afr perfectly after reassembly and check carb hoses and clamps for cracks or issues, if so replace them they are very cheap)
                        2) clean the centrifugal filter (do not and I mean do not damage the oil pump gasket, you will never find a new one.)
                        3) get the petrol tank cleaned.(usually rusts from inside, blow compressed air in the drain holes)
                        4) get air filter cleaned.( clean the foam and wet it with fresh engine oil, use the cheap kind like servo for this)
                        5) change engine oil to semi synthetic kind or fully synthetic (note motul 3100 gold 20w50 keeps pulsars happiest and is good for about 2.5 to 3 k kms, costs about 350rs)
                        6) replace spark plug caps and spark plugs and even spark plug wires.(spark plugs degrade with time, and the caps and wires have resistances that increase with time which is unhealthy for good firing)
                        7) replace clutch plates.(keep them submerged for 8 to 20 hours in fresh engine oil before installing, again use servo etc cheap quality oils for this purpose)
                        8) replace chain sproket set.(replace the entire set and not individual components, use brands like rolon etc and buy a chain lube spray)
                        9) get tappets adjusted. ( use a feeler gauge and should be done by an expert)
                        10) check and replace timing chain if required. (Use oem bajaj parts again a cheap affair but keeps your engine happy and purring like a kitten)
                        11) replace head cover gasket (rubber part, it will become brittle over time and eventually start leaking, replace evry 15k to 20k kms)
                        12) replace brake fluids.(they degrade very easily and destroy paint so be carefull, bleed brakes properly afterwards)
                        13) replace brake pads and disc pads.(replace them they are cheap and are necessary for safe riding)
                        14) give the bike a through wash..
                        15) replace fork oil.( replace fork oil seals if damaged, oil quantity shoukd be measured)
                        16) change axel bearings in the front and rear wheels.(again cheap but very effective and necessary)
                        17) replace petrol pipe from tank to carb.(it becomes brittle over time and is a cheap fix)
                        18) clean petrol pet cock/ tap. (It has a mesh like thing that gets dirty and blocked with dirty fuel particles, tank rust, and adulterated fuel)

                        divyansh....

(Advices are my personal opinion and my pulsar is very healthy at about 75thousand kms....11yrs old....Stock bore....so I guess that speaks for itself)
