  • New Royal Enfield Classic 500 problems that I am facing

    Hey guys,

I have got my new CL500 Black just a week back. As usual, the ride is great and there are few niggles. Need some info regarding some of the niggles.

    1) After couple of days of ride, I have observed that the bent pipe is turning in to straw color where the catalytic converter is placed. I have read some where that this happens when the bike runs rich. Will there be any problem ahead?

    2) There is a strange burnt smell coming after I ride the bike for 2-3 kms. Is this due to the over heating of silencer/catalytic convertor or will there be any other serious issue?

    3) My bike has done 300kms till now. Should I wait for the service @ 500kms or shall I take the bike to the service station immediately?

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

the Cat Con is the concern, the bent pipe should not change color, which is common in may occasions, but take it to the SC and get it checked

I had read most of the time that Bend Silencer is not for new bike, atleast after 4-5k kms.
Did you installed the offroad silencer from SVC ?

I have not installed any off road silencer. Its the standard OEM Bazooka. The burnt smell has died down a bit. I am hoping this has occuurred due to adulterated petrol. I am thinking of taking it to Service Centre on its 500 km mark which is due in another 150 km. Is it ok if I wait till 150 more km?

Actually colouring of the bent pipe is not exactly an issue of extra rich carb setting (although it may indicate a non ideal mixture at times). It happens with a little off-set timing when the exhaust valve opens even before the ending of power stroke / onset of exhaust stroke sending unburnt mixture out into the exhaust. This is a common example (although not inevitable) of slightly RETARDED timing & since your mc is new, I guess it was done on purpose to aid the engine run-in & to keep-away from any chance of spark-advance/ping which may occur due to over-carbon accumulation in your engine on account of extra rich setting (again done on purpose to keep engine cooler & safe during run-in).

It's a matter of erring on the right side ! I would say, don't worry if your bent pipe has not become orange in colour by now !
During 1st service, the service guys will definitely slightly advance the timing & tune the carb for normal setting.

              Ride safe. Happy thumping.
