  • Thunderbird Cold Start issue: Bike jumps as i take the first gear.

    Hi,

I got my tbts on 4th of june. I am facing a strange problem and i want to know if someone else has faced the similar issue. Every time when i start the bike in the morning and take 1st gear, bike jumps and engine stops. I also keep the engine running for around 2 -3 minutes before taking 1st gear. This behavior is same as if i have changed the gear from neutral to first without pressing clutch. If i repeat the process again, change of gear happens smoothly. So the issue happens only on first gear shift after a long halt.

Another issue i noticed which could be related to the problem stated above. I don't start the engine and bring bike in 1st gear with clutch properly pressed and try to movie the bike forward or backward. Bike does not move untill i apply lot of force. Once bike start moving in first gear, i start the bike. This time changing of gear happens smoothly.

It seems like bike's gear plates get stuck somewhere and doesn't move when i take the first gear and hence first problem appears.

    Any ideas?

    Vivek

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

If you are facing this only after COLD STARTing, then it's issue of Sticking Clutch; actually nottin' big at all ! Try this !
Before cold-starting the mc, break the clutch free by pulling-in the clutch lever a couple of times. This should solve your problem !
You may feel more sure (needn't be necessary) by simultaneously pulling the lever (engine 'off') & kicking the kick-start lever a couple of times.

I guess your clutch cable isn't tight so that it becomes a little too-tight after a cold night standing !! I guess not cause then you would have a hard start, which is not your case. Anyways, check the cable slack as well when cold.

      Ride safe. Happy Thumping.

          Yes +1 to caravans
Your clutches are getting stuck on cold, get that fix or replace the clutches if u haven't done already.

I will surely try this tomorrow. I told the issue to RE service centre manager and the mechanic. They suggested me to use choke for 30 seconds with electric start and to avoid kick start. They also suggested to leave the vehicle running for 40 seconds after closing the choke. I tried this method and it seemed to reduce the intensity of the jerk but lately, in colder morning, severity of the problem increased. You explanation seems appropriate but then it should happen with all the RE bikes which is not the case. This seems to be the problem related to clutch plates but RE guys are not ready to understand it and every time I can't leave the buy overnight to prove them wrong.

Yes!! You were right. Using the method you suggested I was able to start the bike with out having it jump below me. So it confirms the Sticking clutch problem. With clutch pressed, I had to kick annoyingly 6-7 times before kick became free. What could be the long term issues? Should I get my clutch plate changed? Will this impact the engine by any way?
