  • Choke problem in new Pulsar 200NS

firstly i would request the mods not to merge this topic with the ownership thread as such topics merge gets lost in the thred between other discussions and problem doesnt get solved

I took delivery of my new NS on 24th oct and i have been facing this small problem right from the first day

The bike starts normally in the morning (7am)and there is no problem in riding

however if i try to start my bike with choke on..the bike starts and immediately dies down

on asking in the ownership thread i found very few replies one of them being try to start just normally hold the throttle a bit and turn on the choke

i tried and the choke kicked in
but on trying the same today it didnt work

i know when the bike turns on normally i shdunt worry about choke but since its a new bike i want things to be running perfectly even if those things are not required right now..may be with the winter coming now i might have problem with the starting

one of the member in the thread suggested it is a lean mixture and he also faces exactly the same situation and gets abt 50 kmpl

little googling gave an answer that the A/F s very rich and hence with choke ON the engine gets very less AIR and so the engine dies
    this explanation seems logical too

are there any other members who have faced such a problem in their bike?

what can be the exact reason?

if the A/F very rich is it fine to run the hike like that till first service during which i will mention this problem to them too

my cold idle is 1.35-1.45K and hot idle is about 1.6K rpm

Thats correct...a rich a/f mix is like forcing yourself to gulp down a glass of water (say) quicker than you can drink and without taking a break to breathe (a funny eg. ). So when you pull the choke you force-in more fuel in the engine and less air.

So I too believe that the rich A/F mix is the culprit. May be thats why your idling a l'il bit higher than what generally owners have...i.e. 1.2k/1.4k at cold/hot. So don't wait for your first service, go to a svc and get it rectified. They should do it without any fuss and shouldn't take much time.

thanks for the help...yes indeed a funny example :P

Today morning i tried to start the bike with the choke a little less than half pulled(didnt go for a ride as had other things to attend to but just wanted to see what happens)

the bike started with half choke on and rpm was higher than idle but less than 2K

so i guess there are 2 possibilities

1.either my tuning is proper and the choke is designed in such a way that even a very lean tuning will make the bike start with choke on cold mornings....so ppl with proper tuning need only a little choke if the engine is very cold

2.or my tuning is rich and the choke actually chokes the engine of air supply by flooding it with petrol

AFR is rich. With choke on, engine's getting choked either with the excess fuel or too little air, or may be both. And i think, with your current afr setting you won't be needing that 'choke' even in Dec-Jan colds. Also idle should be around 1.4k rpm when engine is in operating temperature.

In 200NS, you need to hold on to throttle, along with Choke, to engage it. If it doesn't, than basically your carb is not properly tuned. And, the bike should not require choke until the temperature drops below 14-15 degrees!

i rode for around 10 mins and reduced the idle to around 1.35-1.4K rpm on hot engine from 1.6K

and no the bike starts with 1 button push(have to hold the button for about a little more than half-3/4 of a second..if i just push and leave it immediately it doesnt start) so starting is not an issue...

yes the choke doesnt get engaged if i start with no throttle
but if i hold on to the throttle a bit then the choke does kick in properly...so i guess its not an issue after-all...

The idle was about 1.65K or so i reduced it to 1.4K yesterday after riding for a while

today morning bike refused to start...it started after i gave it a little throttle and pushed the thumb starter...then increased the idle to 1.5K

in the afternoon i was cleaning my bike and was about to take it for a spin and again bike refused to start...increased the idle a bit b4 starting and throttled and pushed the starter...it started and again set it to 1.65K or so

and as usual when i engage choke bike doesnt start at all...

there seems to be some tuning issue....tommorow will check if the bike starts with one thumb push or no as the factory idle is set again and i have done no other changes...(tried to reduce idle speed but set it again at 1.6~1.7K where it originally was)

should i go to svc and tell them about the issue now if the bike starts normally or shud i wait till the first service as i dont have any problem riding...
the only problem is once in a while false neutrals and bad low end torque...at the speed of 20 or so if i am in 3d gear it feels the sprocket is trying to move forward but engine is resisting...and also since i have never owned a bike b4 i cannot guess or feel while riding if the A/F is rich or lean..
