  • Low mileage issue with Honda CBF Stunner

    Hi guys!

I have a Honda CBF Stunner carbed version. I was getting mileage figure of 60+. I changed the spark plug to NGK Iridium and mileage increased by 1-2 kmpl. Got my bike serviced and used Honda engine oil this time. After that, I went on a trip to Kasauli on my bike. Got mileage of 55 kmpl on the hilly and steep roads which is quite impressive for me. But as soon as I came back to Delhi, the mileage dropped to 45 kmpl. I got it checked from a Castrol BikeZone in Mayapuri, New Delhi and they found that choke cable was faulty. Got it changed. Got the carb tuned again as spark plug was black with carbon deposits on it. Changed the air filter. Changed the engine oil to Castrol Activ 4T 20w-40 which I have found the worst so far for my bike and I am going to change it. I have now checked that color spark plug and its brown with no carbon deposits. Bike is idling perfectly and has no other issues. Its just the mileage that I am concerned about as it has dropped significantly and just as soon as I came back to Delhi. Any suggestions?

The color of the spark plug seems alright because for a correct mixture, the spark plug should get brown deposits. Do mention the age and odometer reading of your bike.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

As u have get the carb tuned, check the mileage again. Brownish color is the perfect mixture.
If u want to change the oil, change it to Shell Advance AX7 10w40 as winter is coming, or a Gulf Full Synthetic 10w40.

BTW, from where do u belong??

Check tyre pressure, clean and lube the chain and also, get wheel bearings checked and if needed, greased. Check if the front wheel is moving freely when on centre stand. Check the same for the rear. If not, get the disc pads re-aligned and clean the rear drum brake if needed.

How many kms has your bike run?

Thanks guys for your inputs. I am from New Delhi.
@antz.bin: My bike's odo shows 19100 + kms and its 3 years old now.
@paul.1911: Honda recommends 10W-30 grade oil for Stunner so will try Shell advance but I am not sure if I can get it from New Delhi since there is no gas station from Shell here but will try to get it and will post the observations. Thanks!
@pavanchirmade: Checked tyre pressure and it was just a bit low so this is not the case. Inspected the bike chain and it was dirty. Will clean it and will get the wheel bearings checked. I have checked the movement of the rear wheel and it was moving freely but haven't checked the front wheel yet. Will update after cleaning the chain, checking wheel bearings. Thanks!

Adultrated, low quality or even less fuel dispensed from any fueling station can also be the cause of low mileage. Use up all your tank and use fresh petrol from your favorite, honest fuel station and report back with results.

Ok guys, here's an update. Rode the bike for about 20 Kms now and checked the color spark plug and it had black colored deposits on it. Got the chain cleaned as it was very dirty. Got the wheel bearings checked and found that disk brake was a bit tight and pads were rubbing against the disk and due to that, front wheel was not rotating freely. Got it rectified. Both wheel's bearings were in good condition. Haven't checked the mileage yet but will update once I check that. This mechanic also told that valves are faulty as the vehicle is emitting excessive black smoke when opened the throttle to some extent. Is there any symptom or a way I can confirm about this and get the valves changed if needed? Also, I have noticed that when I use the self starter, the bike starts fine but the RPM is as low as 900 (Can't confirm as it doesn't have a techo) and when I open the throttle a bit, RPM rises to the normal and remains constant after that. Once I turn it off and again use self starter without using throttle, the RPM is low again. I don't know if this is relevant to this or not.
Also, tried to find Shell or Elf semi-synthetic oil but they were not available in 10w-30. Bought Petronas Sprinta 4T 4000 10w-40. Any views about this one?
@ Honda_CBF: I have tried from multiple fueling stations but got the same results. Used to get the mileage of 60+ from those fueling stations but now getting only 45

Your tuning is not correct. The black smoke u mentioned is excess fuel which is not burn off completely. When u'll get the tuning adjust your black smoke will disappear. Don't go for valve replacement. Valve replacement doesn't required more than 1 lack kms if valve clearance is correct.
How do feel when u kick? Is it hard enough?

Today, I checked again and the spark plug color was brown and didn't see any black smoke. I am really confused now. How could this be an intermittent issue? Also, the kick is not very hard but just a bit the first time during cold start but the bike starts in first kick itself without using throttle or choke. After that, the kick is smooth. Even the self starter issue that I mentioned didn't come up today.

Also, I use reserve to reserve method to check mileage. I know it's not very accurate but the difference I am getting now is large. Earlier, the bike would clock 90+ Kms in just 1.5 ltrs of fuel before hitting reserver but now, its just 65-70 kms. Thats a difference of 20+ kms

Thats a 60 kmpl of mileage. If u slightly lean your mixture then u can get more. But excess lean mixture will heat up the engine more.

Right. But I don't think I should make it leaner since the color of the spark plug is brown and making it leaner will lead to engine overheating issues. I guess the carb is tuned to its most optimum settings. Also, even if I make it leaner, it will only make a difference of a few more Kms in the mileage as I can't make it lean enough as its already on its optimum settings. The cause of the issue seems to be something else. My concern is that earlier, with optimum air-fuel mixture, I was getting a mileage 60 and sometimes even more than that. But now, I am getting a mileage of 45-46 only. I have checked spark plug, air filter, wheel bearings, movement of wheels and chain but nothing seems to be the cause of the issue here and I am really confused as there are no other symptoms apart from this low mileage. Is there anything else that I should check?
Very thankful to you for the time you take out to help me. I really appreciate it.

u said u went 90 kms on 1.5 liter of fuel, then it means 60 kmpl. Check again 2-3 times and report back. As per my experience Indian Oil gives the best fuel, try filling from there. Instead of filling for Rs.150 or 200 try filling with only for 50 for several times.
To calculate the mileage try this formula.
(Different in kms (reserve to reserve) / The amount of fuel u filled in rupees) X Cost of Petrol/liter in Rupees
The result u'll get is your mileage in kmpl.
